Colleagues,
Because people have expressed interest in others' successes, I'll briefly relate mine.
I'm a 55 year old 200 lb. lurker from the Over 50 forum here on BF. I did an Oly distance tri on a bet with no training (-0- bicycle experience) 25 years ago. My next one was two weeks ago in El Reno, Oklahoma and then again last week in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 3:00.00 on the flat course in El Reno and 3:01 and change on the very hilly Tulsa course. Temps were low to mid-90's on the run segment in Tulsa.
The open water swim sucked both times. 25 mph winds and white-caps the first weekend. I am definitely obtaining a wet suit. I'm a 26:30 1500 meter swimmer in the pool, but it is clear now how much I depend on a smooth technique to go even that fast. In a lake full of other athletes, smooth water is non-existent and the bouyancy advantage of a wetsuit will help body position when bumping others, recovering from a huge wave, or just stopping and starting in the usual course of things.
I averaged 18.6 mph on my 29 lbs 1968 Peugeot U08 ("Mimi"). That's good for me. Seat of the pants tells me that I gain at least .5mph on the bike simply by affixing outdated Scott tri bars on Mimi.
Ran about 1 hour 10k's both times.
There is lots of time to be had in transitions I see. I will be practicing transitions for sure.
Anyway, thanks to all who post in this forum.
