Recumbent - WizWheels -What is it-how much should I sell it for??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm about to relearn the truth of "no good deed goes unpunished. One of my wife's friends just lost her husband. He was an avid biker, and he had several bikes-nice ones judging from these two.She is strapped for $$ and wants me to sell these two bikes. My wife volunteered me for this duty. I just know this is going to end a bit badly because folks always think their stuff is worth "almost what they paid for it". I constantly buy and sell stuff-bicycles, motorcycles, guns, cars etc.You know the story-see something you like, buy it, then sell something to pay for the last item.
A few questions:
1)Are these bikes "good"? I looked at their websites, so I'm most curious about how the recumbent is viewed by recumbent riders. I "drove" the recum. it was a kick!!
2)How much should I sell them for? The recum. is a Terrabike Tour-recently(6 months ago) bought new.Web site sell them for $1895+ shipping. How much can it be reasonably sold for ?I'm not interested in getting every last nickel- a quick sale is good.It has a rear XT 9 speed derailleur-Shimano Tiagra(sic0 front derail and crankset-hayes mechanical disc brakes. I'm guessing she wants $1200, but I have my doubts.
The Dean-Titanium frame- I know less about. She says he paid $2800? It must be several years old since it has 24 speed gearing. The components are good-XT V-brakes, 217 wheels white Industry hubs, carbon fiber FSA crankarms, XT derailleurs,Sram 9.0 grip shifters, a LP carbon fiber handlebar and seatpost,Marzocchi Bomber Superfly Z 2 fork.I think she wants ~$1050-seems high for last years news, but??
3)How in the heck do I ship the recumb? It is light-maybe 40 lbs, but it is really bulky? Obviously,I have to pull it apart?
Oh well-help!!Thanks,Charlie
I got a clarification-she wants about $500 for the Dean, but she wants to "start" the trike at $1200 on Ebay. If you read below, you know I was wrong-it is an aluminum frame-Sport model-not the tour.See,I'm screwing this up already. The Trike looks almost new.

I'll help you understand the WW TerraTrike. It is not a Tour model. It is the Sport--aluminum frame with a list price of $2400 for 2006. Anything too close to $1200 would be too cheap. Yes, you will have to do a substantial tear-down and the shipping will still cost extra for either one large box or maybe one less than large and a smaller one. The best way to generate the right price would be to use eBay with good photos and accurate description--start cheap and a reserve is not necessary for a trike of this quality.

Chip-thanks for the info. You are right of course, the tubing isn't magnetic.I just assumed it was steel. This fits in better with what the widow is telling me-"we bought it just before the price went up to $2400"
It is a heck of a fun "bike".It sort reminds me of the little trikes I had as a kid-but the componentsand welds are a Zillion times better. This trike is a really well made piece of machinery. This could be just the ticket for an older person(I'm just 55) who is having a bit of trouble with the balance part of 2 wheel biking.
I rode it around the neighborhood a little-fun. It did feel like I could flip it if I turned too sharply-you can't lean into a turn like a 2 wheel bike.
Thanks for the info.Charlie

Yes you can lean into a turn on a trike. It is a heck of a lot more fun taking a turn going fast that slow. That's probably the best part of riding a trike. While you can tip a trike if you really get reckless riders soon learn what the limits are. In over 10,000 miles of trike riding I have only flipped it once and that was at a fairly slow speed.

Charlie,
I'm 58 and ride a trike by choice (for some years now, actually)--it is much more fun for me than any of the two-wheeled variety. Vegastriker is correct about faster cornering. To put it in context, if you've seen a motorcycle with a sidecar corner fast, you've seen the leaning to the inside that is necessary with a trike.
While I have customers who do have balance problems, and riders of any age who are tired of sore parts, I also have sold to young athletic types who just like the triking idea. I describe trikes as lawn chairs with pedals--for when you're cruising around the neighborhook or perhap a wildlife preserve, or go-carts with pedals--which is the way I frequently ride. Had there been this kind of trike when I was twenty-something, I would have had one then. These are definitely NOT Granny's Schwinn.

Problem with the TT Sport is you better be a light rider to ride it. It has a max weight limit of 200lbs and that is for rider AND gear. Start adding any accessories like lights, rack, mirrors, etc. and your payload drops very quickly. This definitely limits the market for the trike.
In general the TerraTrikes don't seem to sell as well as some of the other trikes. It won't help you that they just introduced an entry level $1300 trike either when you go to sell it. It could be a very tough sell. If you get $1500 or so out of it you should be happy to tell the truth. A little bit more and they could have a new Catrike which is most likely a better trike.

Vegas-Chip- Right about high speed turns-I played side car racer leaning in, and is it fun!! This thing has excellent braking power- 2 front discs are a lot better than one front, one rear.
Wavshrdr- It is true you never can be sure what something used will sell for until you actually have the money in hand. It isn't mine, so I don't exactly have a horse in that race. Of course, I want to get her a good price, she needs the $$.
I placed a quick ad-no picture-on another forum(thanks Vegas) just to test the water. Judging from the response, I think it will go for very close to $1900 delivered(about $1750 in hand after shipping and paypal).-WizWheelz wants $2400+$180 shipping+$120accessories)=$2700 for a new one.$1900 for a very slightly used one would catch my attention if I was a buyer.Enthusiasts forums are good for gauging interest, but enthusiasts tend to be frugal. For them part of the thrill is bragging about what a great deal they got to fellow forum members .You ALWAYS get a better price on Ebay-but you have to deal with the fees, the scammers and the lint pickers- C'est la vie!!
I'll be surprised if my no picture ad does the trick. I think she has her heart set on Ebay. Ebay casts a wide net.The extra odds and ends-$50 seat back pack, rear rack~$60, rear view mirror $20, clipless pedals, speedometer/tripmeter all add a bit.
We'll see. Thanks all. Charlie

Charlie, I would say give her the least amount you can and KEEP IT FOR YOURSELF!!!!
I have owned several recumbent trikes and still have two in the stables; a single AND a tandem!
They are the MOST FUN I've ever had cycling!
Don't get me wrong though, I still have half a dozen road bikes & several mountain bikes. I still ride those when I want to "blend"!

Dr Deltron,
Great minds must think alike. The very thought crossed my mind, but lack of $$(post Katrina unemployment for wife and me),lack of space( a piker by the standards here, but I have 5 fully functional bikes+4-5 extra wheelsets,+fair number of parts+2 motorcycles+ 3 MC rolling chasis in backyard+ lotta mc parts+ reloading gear+gun stuff+car/truck stuff). You get the picture.
The Trike is fun but we have so many half-wit , fully drunk/loaded ,AH, drivers around here, that I just don't see myself trying to claim 38" of road with them blowing by me.
The Dean MTB actually really tempts me-under 22 lbs and I still have some weight nut in me. It is a little too big, but it is pretty light for a MTB(hardtail of course).Still,no space, no $$, so no new bike.
Say, what do you have to do to post in the FS section-??? I paid the $25 for the upgrade, but it still won't let me post??
Thanks,Charlie

Still,no space, no $$, so no new bike.
So sad! I feel for you. I'm fortunate enought to have a wife who parks her van on the street and lets me have the whole 2 car garage for my "toys"!:)

Unfortunetly, I have no answer for you. I've actually only sold two bikes in recent memory, and both were to friends. Usually I just keep cramming the new ones in the garage. I'd really like to buy one or both the bikes/trikes you are trying to unload. But alas, my househusband/bike painter budget doesn't allow for that at this point in time. I'm awaiting the arrival of an old Gitane that will be maxing out my space as well. C'est la vie! Good luck with all that.
BTW; I'm working on a project that will make you famous!
