Lately, GM has decided to stop its production of the Hummer. It continues to manufacture the scout car Humvee for the US Military

What do you think?

I'm glad, but I wonder why this is. Are they not selling very well? That's the only explanation I can think of: If it were still a profitable product, I can't see why they'd stop producing them.

This topic has already been discussed in
detail. See this website for extensive pictures
of a HUMMER Graveyard near my house in
Southern California that warehouses UNSOLD
monsters of another era... Click on many
of the pictures to see the entirety of the
MASS GRAVE.

One of the things GM was banking on with the Hummer line was that people would think that they could purchase "personality" for tens of thousands of dollars. Hummers were/are an attempt to sell a tough, military personality and style.

If you're like me and billions of other people, though, you aren't really competent to customize a car much beyond bumper stickers and cheap spray paint-- which is why some try to "express" themselves through a mass-produced vehicle.

If it were still a profitable product, I can't see why they'd stop producing them.

The prior thread about that website definitely didn't convince me that there weren't going to be any more civilian hummers made. Dealerships go through so many cars that it's hard to know what's gonna happen, but apparently they really are quitting the H1. The H2 and H3 are still going to be produced though, and those are the big sellers.

I heard about this awhile back. The thing that gets me though, is that the H1 was the most serious one of the three for off-road and/or utilitarian purposes. The H2 is just a Suburban with a Hummer body and the H3........well, it's true that most of the folks that buy these things are only in it for the vanity.

A question I would like to see answered is, why did they not only quit making the EV1, but also cancel the leases, take back the cars, and destroy them (so I heard).

Seems to me the H1 was the most serious for off-road purposes, but in most cases off-roading is kind of the opposite of utilitarian driving. In utilitarian terms, I think most vehicles that can carry/tow an equal amount of stuff to an H1 get far better gas mileage.

Speaking of offroad, I send a link of this video to everyone I meet who buys an H2:

I can say that the H1's have done a positive service. I know a lot were sold in the Northwest, and they could be seen on the street every day, but not any more. They have a way of inspiring "What the hell was I thinking?" in new owners, while tearing a Humvee sized hole in suv budgets. I haven't seen one in months.

yeah, H1s were not really suitable for the mass public. Too big, expensive, and just impractical. pretty much if you worked construction or something, it was worthwhile.

H2s CAN be made offroad capable...I have seen quite a few decent ones....problem are the idiots who think these are just like the H1, but lighter.....no, these are suburbans with a body kit and modified frame...they are NOT H1s. H3 is just a freaking joke....anything that small for offroad should not even have wheel wells, as it should be converted into a rock climber.

Jeep wranglers rule as far as still in production rock climbing vehicles, and general all around good offroad vehicles. Honestly, if I had a legit use for an SUV, it would be a Wrangler...those things are so nice off-road, yet have tight enough turning radius to be easily maneuverable in a parking lot.

I have 50K on a military Hummer/Humvee. They were designed wide because old jeeps tipped easy. I packed the old ones (WWII) for the IDF (Israeli) Army. The alternators, run-flat tires, vinyl siding, window seal, broke or wore out. I was incensed the civilian model was well made and was as ill suited to soccer moms as was mine to combat.

Kirk Kerkorian wants GM to drop the lines that are unprofitable, Hummer and Saab are among them.

If you have spent any time today watching CNBC then you know what I am talking about.

I have seen them emberass Hummers off road many times, I am looking forward to gettong the new RUBICON as it will be a Hummer killer.

You folks are in the bicycle forums. Carfree at that. Comparing one brand of SUV to another is totally off-topic.

Actually GM doesn't produce the H1 AM General does. The H2, and 3 was a license thing with GM, and AM General. The government has been testing different platforms for years, but have no immediate plans to cease production of the military H1. As far as suvillian H1s go... I think they are toast.

I was only giving friendly info that was requested.

And on a personal level I am so happy that the Hummers are dieing off like this I could scream for reasons that are probably similar to your own.

I also second the sentiments of the Wrangler, the only SUV I can happily live with even though I do not own one and do not ever plan to.
