Novice rider here. I pushed myself too hard these past three months, and have now gotten hit with sinus/upper respiratory trouble due to allergies (which I never had problems with in the past--hey, I'm getting old. Whuhoo.). Basically, it would appear that my immune system was compromised by lack of rest and good nutrition.

So I need to take it easy. And I need to start taking a multivitamin. Problem is, I have a phobia about swallowing large pills, and multivitamins are submarines. Would anyone know of any brand of multivitamin where the individual pills aren't so damn big?

I hate to suggest the obvious, but here it is: Why dont you break the pill into two and then swallow bit by bit?

Two reasons: they're still wide and hard to swallow even if you break them into two; and the broken edges are sharp and painful as they go down.

Flintstones chewable?

I am skeptical of the daily use of multi-vitamins. I think it would make much more sense to look at your diet first and fix the problems there. You should be able to easily get everything you need with a sensible variety of foods.

How about a liquid multivitamin? It has been proven that getting your vitamins in liquid form is easier for the body to absorb than in pill form. Here is a great one that I have been using for the last couple of months. It has 12 full spectrum vitamins, 65 major, trace and ultra trace minerals, mangosteen (whole) which is full of anti-oxidants, decafinated green tea and whole leaf aloe vera. Two more options:

Buy a mortal and pestal and grind the pill to powder. Mix the powder with orange juice/gatorade/soda/whatever and drink it down.

Eat a balanced diet, get your vitamins in your food, and save your money. Vitamins are not a panacea.

I hate big pills too. I always just use the children's chewables.

Keep in mind that over-exercising can cause a temporary weakening of the immune system, however, if this is the cause of your illness, taking a vitamin is not likely to help much. Just take it easy and make sure you don't push so hard next time.

Just re-read the post. Allergies are due to an over-reactive immune system. Exercising is not likely to exacerbate true allergic reactions other than the fact that you are outside more often, exposing yourself to allergens.
