Introductions - Hello from New Hampshire

I'm here in the snowy White Mountains (New Hampshire) patiently awaiting spring. 'been gathering some good information from this site for a few weeks and thought it was time I at least said "Hello!". When I lived in Boston and on Cape Cod I bicycled everywhere...didn't even own a car. Now that I live in the mountains I do drive , but I just last year got back into cycling. My flatlander bike was a real chore to pedal around here so I quit riding when I first moved here. Turned out I wasn't really as out of shape as I thought...I just needed a better bike. Amazing what a difference a decent set of wheels can make, so now, with a new (to me) bike, I'm looking forward to the end of ski season (I run a small inn) and maybe even a bike trip to Ireland.

Are you planning on sticking to the road for a while? There are some good XC races up there. I'm working to make the 24 hour race at Mt. Washington this year, and have watched several of the 24 hour races there in the past years. Livingnn down in the Dover area, I have to travel to get up to the trails in your area, but they are the best around.

I have also considered riding through some of the notches, possibly even a trip from Dover to Berlin, where we have a camp.

Welcome Whitemtn, good to have you aboard. I'm from Mass and waiting for spring as you are. I have a winter bike that I ride to get through it all. It's heavy and rugged and stands up well in the cold and on the salted roads. Winter riding is quite fun, give it a try.

Thanks for the welcomes, MsVicki, moabrider47 & mrfix. When it warms up I will be sticking to the roads as I only have a road bike. As far as the 24-hour@Great Glen...I run an inn, usually without help, so getting away from here for more than an hour or two in the summer & fall is rather difficult...It would be nice to "have a life" again. The inn eats up most of my time when the weather is the best for riding. When I can ride it is with my cell phone and reservation book, so
I can pretend to be at the check-in desk!

I must admit that I haven't pedaled in the winter for about 20 years. Winters here are usually intense...recently it's been so cold that it's been hard to breathe on the commute between buildings and the skiers are keeping me pretty busy.

My wife is from Peterborough, and went to visit there a few years ago. I love the White Mountain Area, we camped and hiked and biked for over 2 weeks. Love the views!

what is your Inn? If we get a chance; we'll make that part of a bike tour sometime. My morning rides start at 6 AM; once the mornings stop being cold; it's a nearly ideal time for riding. You have to give up a little sleep; but when I can get out of bed to do it; I feel better all day.

I drive up to Jackson for brunch at the Red Fox quite often and to do some skating in North Conway, a beautiful area.

I'm on the northwest side of Mount Washington in Jefferson at Applebrook, one of 3 B&B's in Jefferson, about 45 miles from North Conway. I've been hosting a couple of bike groups for a number of years. The Charles River Wheelmen from the Boston area will be coming up for their annual Bikers on Skiis weekend in February. They usually also come up in October for a weekend that they call Applebike. They get to put the miles in on that weekend while I get to spend the weekend cooking for them...massive appetites!!
