My wife and I are looking to move to the northwest after recently visiting Seattle. How is Tacoma for car-free living? We both have spent out whole lives in the suburban sprawl of the midwest and just have to get out. We haven't visited there yet, but she's applying at their Uwash campus. I've been doing car-lite for the past couple of months to get ready, but I'm really looking forward to a less than five mile grocery run with nowhere secure to lock up at. Thanks,

I'm not carfree, but I do ride and live in Tacoma. There aren't many bike paths, but there's always neighborhood streets and traffic is generally watching out for you on sunny days. I commute to work without much difficulty (in the summer) from N. Tacoma through University Place & Steilacoom to DuPont. I know the pharmacy I go to has bike racks in front, can't recall the grocery stores since I don't generally go there. Safeway.com serves the area. Winter is a different story; it gets dark early and when it's dark and raining, I don't feel i can get enough visability (even with lights and reflective vests) to feel safe. Don't ride around downtown much, if that's where you'll be working, you'll get some good hill workouts depending on where you live.
