I'm putting together a bike and I need to shorten the steerer tube. I'd like to do it myself but I'm a bit scared of stuffing it up. The most difficult bit appears to be pushing the star fangled nut further down inside the tube, and keeping it level as it goes down. I know there's a tool for this, but there must be a simple do-it-yourself way as well.
And can you just hacksaw straight through the steering tube? How do you stop it going wonky?
Any advice appreciated!

Measure twice, cut once.
