Road Cycling - Sunglasses That Don't Smudge Or Collect Sweat?

I need to wear eye protection when riding because my contacts dry out. I have 3 pairs of inexpensive riding sunglasses and they all smudge and collect sweat making them useless after an hour or so. Does anyone have experience with riding sunglasses (perferably with interchangable lens) that sit far enough from your face not to get smudged but also block the wind?

I have had the same problem with my contacts. I have a pair of Native Hexx's (I believe these have been discontinued) that do a good job of keeping my contacts from drying out. I recently purchased a pair of Smith Theory's (w/ interchangeable lenses) and they also do a good job. As far a smudging, I have no idea. I just push my sunglasses as close to my eyes as possible. I'd rather have smudges than a contact falling out.

the only thing would be to wear an additional headband
and have that direct the sweat to the sides.

nothing really works. take them off and hose them off with water
from yer bottle then slap back on. it's doable in the peloton

On the cheap sunglasses try applying a coat of two of NUFINISH or TurtleWax platinum car polish to the lenses. Let dry, buff off with a soft cloth. Makes the sweat run right off the lenses. They don't smudge as easily either.

Same problem because I wear contacts and the sweat/tears run to the inside of the lenses of sunglasses, especially in humid conditions. After a Saturday tour (in which I didn't see anything after mile five), I bought a pair of $50 glasses from an LBS with four pair of interchangeable lenses and rode with them Sunday. Not a smear or smudge, despite heavy sweating. No tearing of the eyes, either. Can't recall the brand, but they're $50 retail. Good luck.

+1 RainEx will also work on cheaper glasses but you must test a small area first before applying.

Yeah if you can perfect a design/formulation that really works you might be sitting on a goldmine there. I have tried the waxes and such and they are better than nothing but I still end up with a kind of scuzz on the insides after long rides. There's like a mini weather system inside there and the remnants end up on the lenses.

Tifosi Optics along with a sweat cap/headband/ect..., works for me. I went with a pair with the phototec lens (adjust with the light) but they sell multi lens too. Good luck.

Try close fitting sunglasses (Oakley Half Jackets work for me and they have interchangeable lenses as well) along with a head band called the SweatGutr which channels sweat off to the side of your head.

I have tried the Halo brand, similar idea, but even so it (and the helmet pads) eventually just get too saturated/overwhelmed and you still get drips. One thing that seems to help a little is removing the glasses and sticking them up in the helmet vent holes during climbs...many climbs are shaded and you're not moving fast enough to need to worry about high-speed bug attacks, and that's usually when you're sweating the most. But sometimes it's just grin-and-bear-it time. No silver bullet yet...

try native eyewear. i have a pair and unless i put my finger on the leanse or rub them up against something then they dont smudge. as far as sweat, they have tiny holes above the lense so air flow comes in. came with 4 pairs of lenses and a life time warrenty

I use Native Nano2's (I have contacts as well). They are about $100 and come with four lenses, the darkest one being polarized. They're not bad in the smudge or sweat arena, but anything is going to smudge or get sweat on them at some point. I wear a skull cap under my helmet to keep the sweat out of my glasses. These sit relatively far away from the face and have vents so they don't fog as badly. Their only issue is sweat coming off your brow and blowing into the vents at the top. It's never bad enough that you cannot see.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I will get rid of the El Cheapo glasses and invest in a nice pair. I am tired of wearing glasses that I can't see out of; then hang them off the CamelBak (yes I ride with a CamelBak) after an hour. Descending with smudged glasses is downright scary!!

I swear by Rain X for my auto, as it makes driving in a heavy rain much safer. OTOH, I would hesitate to use it on an expesive pair of shades because it takes a considerable amount of rubbing to remove the last traces.

This may seem really obvious but if my contacts have been dry and bugging me, I ride with rewetting drops. If it is really windy, I will stick them in the leg of my bib shorts so I can get to them easily.

Even on very hot and humid days I have never had a problem with a under armour skull cap combined with a well ventilated helmet. Wish I didn't forget to put my skull cap on today.

honestly, you're going to laugh, but cut a potatoe in half and rub it on the inside and outside of the lense. i used to do that on my car windshield, instead of using rain-x, and the water would bead better with the potatoe. some street racer told me about that trick a long time ago...
