Fifty Plus (50+) - avatars

Not really about biking but couldn't help but notice the avatar used by Dusk. It is the cover of the August, 1971 Playboy. This is odd only because I have a copy of that same volume sitting in my bookcase. I must confess, however, that I didn't keep it for either the picture on the front or the pictures on the inside.(not that I didn't look at them mind you) I kept it for an excellent article re:vietnam that also was on the inside. At the time (as I was there) it seemed pertinent. That aside, the bike is a sports tourer. However, I cannot determine the make maybe Dusk will tell.

:rolleyes: Tell..... the make....Hmmm If you look at the copy you have you will see "winn" not covered by her leg. In 71 who made bikes in Chicago…home of Playboy? Answer is Schwinn. yes it is the Sports Tourer in Lemon Yellow. I built hundreds of them at the shop that summer.

I have no recollection of what I did during that period, but I'm betting it involved bleach blondes with large breasts! I think Gary Diego was hanging around the offices that summer, as well...

That lemon yellow was a popular color. Didn't they also do a sort of baby blue with the Sports Tourer the same year? I assembled 30 or 40 of each that year in the LBS I was working at in Danville, PA. They were a much sought after bike with the physicians at Geisinger Medical Center, just above the Continental and below the Vouyager, if I remember... But, there is much from that time period I no longer recall.

Yes there was a blue one.

I traded my Continental for and still have my Baby blue World Vouyager with it's Durra Ace rear De. The Vouyager also came in Orange that year. The Vouyager is a good touring bike.

Seem like chrome under paint was the thing for a while. Fuji also had a bike with full chrome. I knew and saw several of those striped to chrome.

And if you look at the masthead of that issue, you'll find my uncle's name at Asst Managing Editor. His job was to write those articles. He also developed the Playboy Interview.

I moved around a lot as a kid. There was nothing better for breaking the ice in a new neighborhood than having your uncle work for Playboy. :p
