Newbie stuff

I'm usually the type to just do it but since I don't wan't to get into something needing special tools or skills or something I will just ask first

How do I remove the stem and lock nut so that I can get to and remove the cable guide? The cable guide is the worst part of the bike -by far- and needs to be sanded and "chromed." Just loosen the stem bolt and nut and take everything off? What about putting it back together? Seems very easy to do that but I don't know what little surprises lay in wait..

I don't know why the guide would rust while the headset itself is fine.

The stem will have a center bolt that has to be loosened and the expander released to allow stem removal. Back off the bolt several turns then smack it on top with a rubber or wood mallet. The headset's lock nut will have to be removed to free up the cable guide (center pull brakes I assume). The nut usually requires a 32 mm open end wrench.

You will have to adjust the headset when you reinstall the lock nut.

Hill Rider explained the procedure pretty well. It probably rusted because it is chrome plated steel, not aluminum, or not as well plated as other steel parts.
