Warning, rant coming.

So here is my dealings with Charter. I called a couple weeks ago to set up cable. I really just want to watch the tour de france but OLN requires cable. Anyway, I got an installation date for a Saturday, June 17th. Guy came but couldn't install due to the cable box being in a locked mechanical room. Okay Fine. S*** happens. Monday rolled around, and was able to talk to my landlord. He wouldn't give me the key for obvious reasons but said he would give the installer the key if he stopped by the office 9-5 M-F. So I immediately called charter and tried to set up an appointment. Turns out they couldn't install it between 9-5 that week but offered me a Saturday appointment or a Wednesday 5:00-7:00 appointment right after I told them it had to be Monday-Friday and between 9-5. A few minutes of frustration yielded an appoinment scheduled between 3-5 Monday the 26th (yesterday which means I called originally about two weeks ago). I left work early (without notifying anyone - a mistake in hindsight) and waited till 4:30 when I got a call from the installer who said he could be there at 5:15. I told him to call my landlord who told him, to basically forget it because he was leaving  . Installer said he will install it on Thursday at 9:00 am. Obviously, I was not happy with anyone involved.

Today at 10:15 I decided to call Charter and complain (my landlord will be b***** out as well, after I finish this). After about 30 minutes I actually talk to someone that can help. She says she will wave the installation fee but that I can't have the cable installed on Thursday morning. I talked to her supervisor after 20+ minutes of holding. I lost my cool at that point and told him that I wanted the cable installed on Thursday when I was told. He claimed that nothing was even scheduled for this week and that noone attempted to install anything yesterday but there was a service request for my apartment not an installation request. WTF?!?! This guys job, I think was to jerk me around and get me to hang up. I am a sort of an a****** so that wasn't happening. We argued for a few minutes and I said that I was not paying for my first month or the installation fee due to my lost wages from skipping work. He then proceded to offer me the same price that I was originally planning on paying ie "We can bring your bill down to $68.32/month" which is the exact price I was quoted. I tried explaining that he was not giving me a discount because that was my original price and maintained I wouldn't paying for the first month. He said they wouldn't install it unless I paid, so I talked to his supervisor (had a couple minutes on hold to cool off).

So I tried to maintain my cool this time and I think I did but unfortunatelly, I was told they still would not move up my installation (seriously?) At which point I told him, I was not going to pay for anything untill August and he said: "Unfortunatelly, we won't install anything in that case." Which, after 1:28 on the phone, got a "Fine, don't install it then." And all I wanted to do was watch the Tour de France reruns after work :( . So, I guess that is that.

Moral of the story, Charter Communications Sucks.

Rant over.

All of these companies suck. And the reason is because we gave them the power to do it. They probably know that you have no other choice. You probably can't choose between 3-4 different major phone/dsl telcos or 3-4 different cable companies and a slew of small guys and they know this. :)

Exactly, for a city of 215,000 plus the surrounding suburbs, we only have 1 cable company!!!

Many people would chose to sit there and make concessions but me, I am too stuborn and obessed with not giving in so no Tour watching for me. I guess I'll actually have to ride my bike instead ;) .

You'll mightbe lucky to find one area that has more then one or 2 cable/phone companies but rarely ever will find it. I've yet to see it. Even if you dont need "cable tv" one may very well need internet and you're screwed the same way. You're also screwed the same way if you use the phone alot and dont' have internet and aren't savvy enough to get viop (which requires internet)

We had two cable companies up until about two months ago when Charter bought the local guys up. Luckily I haven't had any problems with Charter so far, so I don't mind. Their customer service does suck, but their products aren't bad.

Dish Network (http://www.dishtv.com/) currently offers 40 channels (including OLN) for $19.99/month.

You can pick up a Dish Network system at RadioShack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2110408&cp=2032057.2032174&pg=1&y=7&x=15&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=family) for $49.97.

My dad was able to install his system himself, and he's an idiot when it comes to technology.
