Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have an early 90's Trek 1000 bought it used in great shape after riding it for a year I'm wondering about doing some upgrades on it... It has all suntour components and im wanting to go to sti shifters on the handlebar... I found 7 speed shifters on the net and was wondering what all I would need to put this on my bike? possibly just shifters and new derailer or does the cassette and hub need to be changed also? I would love a new bike but I am going to wait till I can get a nice one I would hate to be unhappy with a new one after a year or so
thanks

thanks You need a shimano SIT compatible front deralier. If the suntour stuff was index, everything else may work ok.cost nothing to try it.A shimano rear deralier is cheap if needed and if the freewheel/cassette is not the proper spacing, replacements aren't too expensive.Suntour 7 speed index was compatible with Shimano 7 speed index, but the front deralaier likely woint work with STI.
