I'm gonna brag. Everybody can brag once in a while.

I got 4 other people to join me in riding as much as possible this month. My team of 5 has ridden 111 times so far. And that includes one slacker that has only ridden 5 times. We've done 1,139 miles among the 5 of us. That's 1,139 miles that are not recreational, but utilitarian. 1,139 miles that may have otherwise been done by car. That's 57 gallons of gas (if we all had cars that went 20 mpg). And the month's not over yet.

Got any results to show for your advocacy you want to brag about?

not a damn thing... and tonight, when I tried to educate a nasty buzzing cager, I was threatened with a " what if I pulled out a 9 mm right now? " ....

f-ing pointless.....

Good for you, sbhikes. Sometimes, all it takes is a support group to get people going! Great job on saving gas.

Over the years, I've taken 60 Scout on rides totalling about 5000 miles.

Most have earned Bicycling Merit badge.

None have been involved in any accidents.

Well I've got more people I work with to bike commute. Not every day but when the weathers nice. I am also going to help a co-worker pick out a bike soon so that he can start commuting daily. That's about it. I don't push it on anyone, just lead by example.

There's one other person in my office who did it a few times last year, but he hasn't gotten around to it at all so far this year. (But the summer is still young here in Maine.) Another few expressed some interest but have yet to actually do it. But I know I have raised awareness by just showing up every day, and a few weeks ago I had a table of bike safety information at a "Safety Fair" we had, which got some conversation going.

Just this morning I had a little victory. My co-worker told me that she took her car in to the nearby dealer this morning. (I'm oh so glad I don't need to do that anymore! But I digress... :)) In their shuttle van bringing her to the office, they passed me on the road, and the shuttle driver says "What's that guy doing riding a bike?" My co-worker told him I'm a bike commuter and that I ride my bike everywhere. The driver says "Oh." I'm optimistic that it at least made a little light bulb go on for him.

That same co-worker, by the way, has a son who rides a lot. When I asked her more about it, it was apparent he could use more information about riding in traffic. She took some of my safety information, and I loaned her my copy of John Allen's little booklet (http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/usa/index.htm). She said it was very useful and copied a few pages for him!

I just noticed this thread last night and thought, you know, I can't think of anyone I've influenced.

Ironically, that changed today. A regular customer came into the dealership today to have his F150 serviced. I took the road bike today and as usual, it was parked against the wall next to my service desk. After his truck was checked in, he and I began to talk. In the past, he has asked me about my bike and my commute to work, but it was just small talk.

Today, he tells me that since seeing my bike and talking to me during past visits, he has begun riding every morning for the excercise...and so far has lost twenty-five pounds and several inches from his waist. He breathes better, feels better, his digestion is better, and, with a wink, informed me his wife is happier..."if you know what I mean".

Who needs drug companies to cure what ails ya...ride a bike.

Hey, jwc, that's great!

I did some calculations. The whole contest I'm in had some amazing statistics:
Total miles ridden by everyone in the contest: 126,239.58
At 20mph, how many gallons of gas we didn't use: 6,311.98
At $3.50/gallon, how much money we saved on gas: $22,091.93
Average number of miles this month per rider: 122.68

(My number of miles this month: 436)

I'm just amazed!
