Lake or Sidi. LAKE is the KING! I have had mine for like 7 years. They cost (back then) $200.

Specialized shoes have a stiff sole and you can get their MTB Sport shoe for a decent price.

I had the Specialized MTB Comp shoes for a few years and they were plenty stiff.

Word. The soles are just a big carbon-fibre plate, like their road shoes, with a rubber sole.

My subjective "try to get the sole to flex' tests in the shops indicated this one was stiffest, and I made a exective decision to pay a ******** amount of money for them thusly.

But pretty much any of the pricier race shoes will have close to zero flex. And it makes a noticible difference during hard pedalling, contrary to my much-earlier expectations.

If you freeride, just get a pair of skate shoes, that's what I wear. If you want, you could get a pair of 661's or Nike Whistlers.

You will love this. I am a rodie looking for mtb shoes. rodie shoes are crappy for anything other than riding. Would love something I can actually walk in. my Nguba's are giving me hot spots after 30 ish miles.

Specialized mtn comp are a good shoe. And I understand exactly why you're here. I bought my pair when I got my first ROAD pedals. 2 reasons: You can walk in 'em, and when I make the permanent switch to clipless on my mtb, I won't need new shoes.
