If you use tires from Schwalbe or Continental you may have noticed that they fit so very snuggly that getting them on or off is "a battle royale". The culprit in this situation is your rim tape. It is too thick. Even tape that is only 1mm thick can exceed the clearances need by your tires. Learn more about this problem and at least one possible solution in the use of Rox Rim Tape.

For years I have used electrical tape to replace the rim strips that manufacturers put on my narrow road bike rims. Appply it, poke a hole throught the tape for the valve, and you are ready to go. Out here in the desert rubber rim strips last only a few years before they disintegrate. It is cheap, strong enough to protect the tube from the spoke nipples, and will stay in place for years. All you need to do is to pull on the tape as you apply it to the rim and it will become a bit narrower than the 1/2 inch width of the roll. It is a lot thinner than the fabric tape some makers use. If you need to remove the tape and clean any remaining tape glue from the rim, just clean it off with a rag and mineral spirits.
