HOW DO YOU SECURE YOUR BIKE WITHOUT A BIKE LOCK, while going inside a store or just going inside an establishment, I have tried several of this trick,
a. take out the front tire
b. place the chain to the smallest crank
c. place the chain in the biggest cog,
d. and always have your eyes on your bike,

so far I still have my bike

Buy a large, vicious dog and staple it to the frame.

Walk softly and carry a big stick.

Park your bike next to one that's much nicer one than yours. ;)

Adjust your brake calipers (if your bike has them..) to tighten when you throw the quick-adjust lever. Any opportunistic thief is probably too brain-addled to figure it out in less than 30 seconds...

Run your helmet strap around your fork and through your spokes, or use your glove the same way. It'll slow a thief down a few seconds.

If it's a really spanky one, lend it to me. I promise to bring it back! :D

I only leave it in my garage.

1: Leave it in top gear. You cant pedal off at all.
2: With horizontal dropouts, undo the rear quick release, so the wheel jams on pedalling.
3: Undo the brake caliper release, so the brakes dont work. You can pick up your bike at the next junction or at the bottom of a hill, and straighten it out in a vice.

I only leave the bike unlocked outside small village shops. In any town, I lock it or loose it.

Bear in mind that these are not really "secure" options:

I have also heard that "leave it in the top gear" idea.
Take a bungee cord end from your rack and attach it to the rear wheel. This keeps it from rolling easily.
Take one of the pedals with you. It is easier to lug around than a wheel.

None of these options helps you if the thief just tosses the bike into the back of a pickup truck and drives away. Most of the other strategies that I know of revolve around making the bike an unattractive target for theft. Creative use of reflective tape can really "uglify" a bike for instance. Selection of a good town bike takes into account "theft appeal", Fixed gear or older bikes are in this category.

I've heard taking the seat away with you helps (though not against the guy with a pickup truck, of course.)

I do wonder at regular commuters carrying their seatpost and saddle around . Life would be so much easier with a lower grade post and a bolt fitting.

Bring it inside and park it by your desk.

Just remember not to look at it too much or you'll not get any work done.

I wish this wasn't the case and it's frusturating... But, I never ride it anywhere I can't take it inside with me. :p

Another option is what I've done with my Harley... I place a .45 round on the seat with a note to those that feel inclined. :D
