Sorry but you need a team, there are still plenty of riders with strong teams that are contenders. The Disco 4, Cadel Evans, Flandis, Levi and my new favorite Valverde.

Maybe T-Mobile will finally work for Vino. If he starts, of course.

That would be too funny. No big difference though, he wasn't wearing their colors anyway!

Valverde is a star, but one has to keep checking Operation Puerto lists every hour - being Spanish and not knowing about a certain juice place in the neighbourhood :)

Levi - I don't know. Vino has demonstrated that he just ride away from Levi & friends when he really needs the points.

Vino is out because so many riders on the Astana-Wurth roster got busted they no longer have the 6 riders required to start the tour.

Valverde seems to have been named in all of this but because his last contact seems to be about 2 years ago they aren't banning him from the tour.

The codenames discovered on the back of a business card confiscated from haemotologist Jose Luis Merino are thought to have offered further important clues. One of those codenames - "Birillo" - happens to also be the name of Basso's pet dog. The investigators' suspicions may have deepened when they realised that former Comunitat Valenciana man Alejandro Valverde owns a dog called "Piti" - another name which appeared on the business card.

Reports in Spain have indicated that Valverde escaped action today as the last references to "Piti" allegedly date from 2004.

So let me get this straight -- the Spaniards aren't gonna ask that their best shot at winning be kicked out of the race because he cheated two years ago? And ASO is going along with it because now, with Ullrich, Basso, Vino, and Mancebo out, the Euros' best hope of beating the Barber, Levi, Georgie Boy, et al is Valverde. That about sum it up?

I guess they are looking at it as they don't have any proof he is currently cheating. Hell Millar is starting he was caught with EPO in 2004. :D

I think this is the definition of Shadenfreude... well, not really, because I'm not necessarily happy that he's out, but I did find that statement to be particularly funny.

Not anymore... Wurth is out of the TdF now...

Well, I must admit I like watching the guy ride, but I know he's probably in the thick of this stuff just like those that are implicated right now...he's likely with a different doc, ya know? I would hate to see one of the last strong, enhanced riders just run away with the TdF this year because the rest aren't as "privileged."

Knock out the top 20 and the race really opens up this year...vive!

A all americian podium???? or 2 discovery riders on the podium??? I thought it was wide open before, but now the GC riders may have to closely watch every break away. If some "unknown" or lower tier GC rider gets in a good break and gets 20 to 30 minutes up like a few years ago it could be very interesting.

Very true.

I agree with the teams not allowing experienced pro replacements. But as a compromize, they could have been forced to replace with some neo-pros who hadn't raced a ProTour race in 2006, or even some under-23, even recruit some amateurs in a hurry. That would really make it interesting, since you've now introduced more variables into the competition, no one knows who to mark, can't really let anyone get away.
