I've got a like new '95 Stumpjumper chromoly rigid MTB fork. Will it be safe on my 26" tandem? I'm looking to upgrade to threadless headset...
Thanks!

Problem may be the length of the fork- If a lot shorter- it will alter the angle of the head tube and could make the steering a bit "Twitchy" A mountain Bike fork will be strong enough for a tandem- providing it is in good condition. I would have doubts as to the Safety of the fork- Unless it has always been in my ownership and I am certain that it has not been put under any stress.

It's my fork off my bike. I brought the bike home in 1995, put on my old Manitou fork, and placed this one in the Manitou box.
It's a 26" fork going on a 26" tandem. It has a little suspension room built in (same frame was sold w/suspension forks, so the rigid version made up for it a bit). It may slightly raise the front of the tandem. I'll have to check on this...

Stapfarm has already addressed the fork length issue: most tandem forks have a higher crown than 1/2 bike forks as well as different off-set. Thus, you'll either need to run the numbers on what your net difference in trail might be or would need to throw caution to the wind and give it a try to see how it works.
However, before being a crash-test dummy, you'd want to address durability. While rigid MTB forks tend to be overbuilt, I wouldn't assume too much if you're combined team weight is over 275lbs. Therefore, I'd be inclined to call or to send a note to Specialized tech support to find out what they think. They'll have access to the failure history of any Specialized component as well as the design specs and would be better able to give you an informed assessment of it's overall suitabilty from a strength and durabilty perspective.
