It was 50. Look at stages 11 and 12 and see if you can figure it out if you don;t already know.

I love tour trivia. :)

This was the year the Italian team had rocks, mudpies, and bottlecaps thrown at them by angry French fans. The road was blocked by a mob on the way up the Aspin, Bartali was thrown to the ground, and then Robic accidentally ran into him. Words were exchanged with the mob, tempers flared, and the tour director came up in a motorcar waving his cane at the crowd, incensed.

When the police cleared it all up, the race continued, and Bartali and Magni (who was a fair bit behind the lead group until the fracas) ended up 1-2 on the stage with Magni claiming the maillot jaune from Gauthier - for one day only, because the Italian team director Binda withdrew the team that night, even after Goddet offered to give them disguised jerseys for the rest of the tour. The next stage was summarily re-routed and the poor Italians had nothing to show for their efforts, with the Swissman Kübler taking over as leader and eventual winner.

This is quite an aside, but has anyone seen the VELO NEWS cover with George Hincapie? If you've got a copy, note his calves! If you've got a digital of this photo, please give me a heads up, or post it please.
This is a whole new race, isn't it?

I haven't seen it, but are you talking about his varicose saphenous veins? I've heard that he intends to get them stripped or lasered or whatever they do to the things, but not until after his career is over.
