got up arly today, beautiful day to ride I was all smile when I met with my riding partner, We decided to do hill work preparing me for my next duathlon which should be a very hilly one.
Once on a very steep hill, something went wrong, I was changing gears and my chain came off, I didnt have time to unclip and I fell pretty hard. I went to get up and ouch.. I couldnt even walk..
He had to ride back home and get his car and come back to get me. the pain was so bad I decided to go to th emergency room. I have a sprained ankle and a torned ligament. :( :(
No riding for a while or running :( Im in an air cast and cruthches. I feel so frustrated and it setting m back for my training.

vicodin isnt gonna stop the accident b4 it happened.

oh, n btw hope you get well soon. im always injured and im only 14. i know how it feels, especialy not being able to train for the duathalon your doing, that stinks. if your not a fast healer id suggest going to see a physical therapist once just for them to show you a few good stretches and stuff, i tore legaments in my knee about 6 months back from bike riding, and i had to go to physical therapy more than once, but every time i went there and did thier stretches and stuff, the next day i felt like doing backflips, but i knew that wasnt a good idea. lol

I procrastinated and it cost me, but thanks for your kind words. It helps. Ill b back riding and running in no time. or a couple weeks or three, but ill be back

I'm sorry to hear about the accident! On the plus side, at least it wasn't worse. I hope you recover quickly. Times when I've been recovering from bad accidents, I have found that it's helpful to focus on the progress I was making, rather than on what I still couldn't do as a result of the injuries. Everyone wants to be healed yesterday, of course, but try to be patient and positive. Who knows? Maybe you'll come back even stronger as a result of the time off, followed by some specific training. Get well soon!

That's what happens when you try to run and ride in the same day.

The day I got hit by a car, I had planned on running that night.

So don't do both.

Ever.

Sorry to hear about the accident and ankle injury. I'm 31 and have an ankle that's about 60 years old because of injuries--all sprains. You should be able to ride with ankle support in about a month--nothing to jarring though. The latest for me was 3 weeks ago while hiking across the Ganja Grasslands in Tibetan China. Luckily I carry tape with me and was able to tape it up really tight (along with my hiking boots) until I got to the village and caught a "van" back to Labrang (Xiahe to the Chinese). I actually took up cycling a year and a half ago since my ankle is no good for running anymore.

Don't try to get back in the saddle too soon, mon chéri. Ankles and ligaments aren't something you want to screw with. Better to be out a little longer this season and heal up well than to be paying the price 5 or 10 years from now.

Get well soon, Blondie!:o I was off the bike for about 6 months when I hurt my ankle, but I broke it in 3 or 4 places. Let's see...one screw on the left side, three(?) on the right side + steel plate, so...yeah, 3 places. It sucked, by the way. I was popping wheelies when I broke it, tho.

Hey Blondie, hope the pain isn't too bad, make sure you keep it elevated. How long are you going to be out of commission? Not too long, I hope...sorry about that.

On the good side, you can spend more time on bikeforums....:D

I dont know how long, they said a couple weeks if all goes fine.. but I dont think they meant a couple weeks to be back to runnng and biking everyday, I think they meant a couple weeks to walk withought the cast

If you're making derailleurs explode, your legs must be incredibly powerful. :) Hope you feel better soon and heal up quick. If you get bored, here's some useful links:

it's a shimano 105.. Ill try and take pics later..my bike is only 10 months old, and you cant even count winter months.. Im sure this is natural but I had a dream of falling off of it last night, I really dislike my clipless shoes, they dont unclip right which causes me to fall way too many times, this last time was the one time I was scared about, the one time when Im really gonna get hurt and I sure did. If you told me that I could get back on my bike today, I dont think i would..this accident scrared the heck out of me. Im sure it will pass

You just need to have the tension on your pedals adjusted properly and you won't have trouble getting out.

uga8589
07-02-06, 06:41 AM
I know it doesn't help, but accidents happen in any sport. The secret is getting comfortable to where you unconscientiously become competent at clipping in and out. When I first started I bought a cheap pedal and cheap shoes. It was hard to clip in and harder to clip out and the LBS I first went to gave me poor advice on the pedal and the shoes. The shoes hurt and I couldn't master clipping in and out of the pedals. My first upgrade was a great pair of shoes (comfort) and a pair of Ultegra pedals. I then put the bike on the trainer and practiced clipping in and out. Also, if I know that I am going to stop, I clip out with one leg immediately. In your situation with the RD snapping, I am not sure that anything would have stopped you from getting hurt.

Is your bike still under warranty? If it is, you should be covered for the damage. I put a link below to a thread that discusses an Ultegra RD snapping. Did yours snap on the cage (two pulleys)? It simply should not be normal for a RD to snap in half. Replace your fear with anger over the mechanical failure of your bike and direct it toward the bike manuf. Try to get pictures of you and the bike (you with the cast) and go to the LBS and ask them what they think the manuf is willing to do. I would expect all damage to be repaired (check out frame carefully it may need to be replaced) and I would want my medical bills paid.

Seriously, I have read about this two or three other times over the last 3 months or so. Shimano could have a problem with the material used to construct the cages on the RD. I am assuming that this is where your snapped. If yours broke in a different place (hard to imagine), it still shouldnt have. All of this is not your fault and couldnt have been avoided. If you were in your brand new car and your brakes failed, would you be piss*d at the car manuf?

I hope you heal quickly (physically and mentally). Get off the couch and go kick the LBS right in the ass with your good foot. Please let me know the details of your accident (bike type, where the break occured, damage to your bike, etc.). Keep us informed of your progress.

That completely sucks, BDG. Getting hurt is bad, but it's worse when it throws off your training. I've been knocked out of events by injury in past, and it's no fun sitting on the sidelines knowing you could be in the game. Get well soon.

Ill take my bike to the LbS tomorrow and see what they say.. it is under warranty, so I should have no problem there.. Im at fault too I think, like I said I fell the week before and banged the derailleur, I should of got it check, could of cracked it.. it didnt happend out of the blue. I think Im at fault :(.. live and learn but I might not tell them that so they cover the cost.. it was stupid of me.. hopefully they dont read this! and you're right when it snapped I remember thinking I didnt even have time to disengage my shoes, all I had time was to think of falling in a way where it wouldnt hurt too much, I remember thinking, wow.. no scratches and screaming "Im fine!!!" till I realised my foot was still clipped in my shoe and facing a way that maybe it shouldnt of faced? lol.. ohh brother... Ill let you know what they say, hopefully they'll cover the cost but i think i did it myself by not checking to see if I had damaged it, the hill was about 1 mile and was the steepiest I have ever done, so if it was cracked, no wonder why it snapped right off. thanks for all your advice, it sound crappy but I dont think i wll tell them that I had fell on it, so that they cover the cost, hospital bill.. no biggie, i have good insurance.AND..... I am getting off the couch, im going baoting :) the sport of the lazy ...

hmm, 105 deraileurs should be tougher than that....I have one in my junk box I call "Kreuger" because it's so badly scarred up, just liked Freddy is...it works fine...I just swapped it out when i did my campy conversion.

As for pedals...I'd say go with a platform type eggbeater if you have trouble unclipping...the spring tension is just about perfect in my opinion, but the way they float takes some getting used to.

I got something that will make you feel better.

I tried clipless pedals for the first time on my mountain bike. I thought, "this can't be hard, I've been doing this on my road bike for years." I got a little too comfortable with them and started hauling up a slick rock face at a super steep grade. I've made it up this before with platform pedals, so it didn't seem like a big deal. Well, my tire grabbed a little too good and I was unable to clip out in time. My front tire went up and up and up until I completely flipped over and landed on my back with the bike on top of me while I slid down the face. What fun!

:) thanks mirona, I feel like such a dork for always falling off my bike

cycle17
07-02-06, 09:40 PM
You shouldn't feel like a dork.

It happens to us all at one point or another. That's how I got hurt last Fall. Stopped to avoid car door opened suddenly in my apartment complex and fell straight over to the left on my left leg and hip still clipped in. I stopped in time, but no time to unclip. That injury lost me the entire fall and winter of riding and training this past year. You'll bounce back! Don't rush it though. You'll be riding before your runnning I bet.

Pfft! It's only bad the few hundred times you fall at first getting used to them. Then, of course, there's the times you need to clip out right away, but can't. No worries, mate!;)

BIG hug for you! :D :D I guess that ride will have to wait 'till the Fall huh?;) NH foliage is quite beautiful in October. Take care of yourself. You'll get past this.:) I know it's tougher mentally than physically. Iwas in the best shape in a long time before I fell last september and lost the entire winter. :( It was hardest on me mentally and emotionally. But now I'm healthy and working my way back to where I want to be. Hang in there Blondie.:D Big hugs and lotta' love to ya!:D

I've heard pilates is great for strengthening your muscles, as well as yoga. I have done yoga, and it would probably be a great choice, although some of the poses causes you to put press and stretch on your ankle. I'm not sure about pilates. It seems a lot of those excersises are done seated or laying down, so that might be a better choice.

I understand, got all kinds of Hugs for ya..

Tell ya story about my brother.
4 months ago he got hit by a car on his colnago Alum. frame. He did not get hurt but the Insurance comp. more or less totaled it out so to speak.

He went out and bought a Ti.carbon titanio Guru, really a *****in bike. the first day he got it and was ridding had a felony hit and run, again he was ok.

three weeks later going down a hill @ atound 40 mph he developed a high speed wobble, hit a pothole and down he went.
His injuries were/are
4 broken vertebras in his back
fractured right clavacle
broken heel
tore part of his left thumb off which was re-stitched back on.

Last week he went for his first ride again, basically starting completely over.
I have no doubts he will be even stronger, just like you will.

Maybe swimming without kicking your feet? At least you can get in some good aerobic training and upper body workout.
