Mountain Biking - what kind of lube?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
ok i just bought new pedals, crank brothers 5050x, and i know i need to lube them before installing but i dont know what kind of lube to use or where to get it. i could go to a LBS, but id like to save myself the drive if i can get the proper stuff somewhere close, like an auto parts store
Lubrimatic Wheel Bearing Grease, it's like $2.75 at Home Depot. It is basically the same stuff as "bike grease", just a boat load cheaper.

I just use a dab of motor oil on my chain and sproket lube on the pedal threads (the stuff that's usually hard and yellow... kinda like ear wax). WD 40 for everything else, but i mean my bike isn't all jazzed up like most so i don't really care to make a special trip to get the really expensive bike lube. If you have a dandy bike and don't want to get black gunk on your parts go with the previousely suggested home depot stuff, i've used it and it really is the same stuff you get at the LBS.

do you mean the threads on the spindle? Get some grease, Wal-Mart has cheap grease in the automotive section. Works just as good as anything else out there.

Yeah, you shouldn't have to lube the spindles for a LONG time.
