Just read through the newbies and thought to add my own. I spent 16 years in the UK without a car. A bicycle was my mode of transport. I would take daily rides for fun to unwind, usually with a pub at the end with routes tested to the headwind in the fens. I worked in cycle action in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire from 1991 - 1996, bringing the Millennium Route and dedicated cycle lanes to Spalding, Lincs. Still used my bike, a 1953 Triumph, right up to my return to the USA. Owned a custom made triple tandem when the kids were small (she always turned heads and got questions) and a racer for best. Always dreaming but never quite getting that recumbent. Spotted those in a NYT article way back in 1979.

Yes, I am a Yank and back now in New Jersey: Haddon Heights. Still have that custom made racer in the basement (gave the triple away and sold the Triumph to a friend who would look after her) but have not been back on since I returned in 2001: the roads are crap, NJ is VERY congested, no cycling provision on any road near me at all and the drivers are absolutely ignorant of cyclists - cyclists don't know traffic rules apply to them, you know, the usual!

It's been hard to shift from everyday transport thinking to leisure thinking (still want a Pashley to honor the old Triumph!) but am just about there. Am very ignorant of the best to buy for our needs for leisure so glad to find you!
