had a little bit of fun last night. i was riding home from a friend's place on a relatively busy street. i looked over my shoulder for a second to make sure there weren't any cars coming at me, and then next thing i know i'm on the ground confused and in pain. apparently i had completely overlooked one of those stupid ass metal sewer grids that's just a touch wider than my tires. the front dropped into the grid, the bike stopped, and i didn't. bashed, bruised, and bloodied. everyone who sees my face asks me what happened, and i have to tell the story of my stupidity every time. someone come up with a better story for me.

i'm never washing this hat. ever.
Dude, some ******* turned left right in front of you on your green light. You tried to skid to a stop, but you weren't going to stop in time so you launched this KILLER bunnyhop right over the trunk of the car. Unfortunately, the silly bolt-on spoiler caught your rear wheel as you were about to clear it and you were headed straight for the ground. Because of your ninja techniques you were able to roll with it, but your forehead scraped the ground a wee bit. You finished the roll back on your wheels and rode away feeling like an absolute GOD.
nice hat! How did your wheel fare in the encounter?
As for the grate, call it in to the city. That's a serious hazard to cyclists and needs to be fixed. If it's a round manhole cover with slots in it, you can probably fix it yourself. Lift it using the slots for handles and rotate it to be perpendicular to bicycle traffic. If it's stuck, you'll probably need assistance from a few other guys to crack it loose. If it's bolted down, welded shut, or not the kind of grate that can be reoriented, then the city needs to take care of it. I have heard of places where the city will weld flat metal strips across long slotted grates to make the slots short enough that a wheel can't get stuck in them.

helmets....ahahahahaha what are those???? ha I ride with a helmet sometimes but most of the time, I just don't fall. I had something like that happen a while ago and I got a prostetic tooth from it and a bent, not broken, finger. -Will
i didn't use a helmet when i was living in NOLA either, although i should have. riding in NYC though it seems idiotic not to, and the people i usually see riding without one confirm that.
