My GF wants me to do her first full marathon with her.

The Rochester Marathon benefitting AIDS research is coming up soon, so I've started training for it.

That means less riding and more running for me.

I once did a marathon length hike on a whim...just kind of woke up one morning and figured I wanted to do it. 24mi with 10000ft of climbing took me 10 hours, and I had trouble walking for a few days.

You'll be fine though, I promise :D

I tried training for one but realized my bad hips/knees weren't up for it. I got up to 50 miles a week until my hip started screaming and left me rocked. Stupid childhood injuries

why not just do a century? this is bad on the joints.

I can't run to save my life. All of the runners I know with steadily worsening injuries (caused by it) don't help motivate me either. I guess I'll stick to bikes.

Do I have a choice?

Just look at those eyes! How can I turn down those eyes?

That's why.

That last quote is a little weird.

good for you! that's a great goal, dont go about it on love only! get yourself a training plan, nice, steady and slow inprovement.. that will increase your chance of doing a full marathon injury free.. she really got you whipped huh? :)

Hmmm...Lance is doing the NYC marathon so now fiddy's training for a marathon? Coincidence? I think not!

I'm Lance's clone.

The wonderful people at Merck hatched me in 2000.

Lance will do well...he was a triathlon prodigy before focusing on the bike. So he can run.
You can do it, Fiddy, it's some good times. I've only hallucinated during one (very very hot) marathon. :D

It's definitely worth doing. I've done five and haven't regretted a single one, even the one where I cramped up with a mile to go. In fact, I've got a picture here on my desk of my crossing the finish of the 2001 CIM. Good times, even with the bloody nipples.

Make sure you put in the training or you will suffer. However, if you put in the training, it is a great experience. I have finished several, including Bosting in 2004. The temps at the start reached 87 degrees. That was a tough day.

Yeah, if you were riding your bike, you'd have been hatched by the wonderful Belgians at Merckx

Good for you, and good luck!

I witnessed people running through the finish line of a marathon for the first time about a month ago, and it was very inspiring. Now, I want to train and run in one. It will be hard, because I suck at running, but I want to try.

best of luck, make sure you actually train for it (instead of running willy nilly trying to keep up with her)

And then you can return the favor with, "so, <insert pet name here>, how's about riding that century with me?"

BTW, good luck on that marathon, 56.... anything for the GF, right?

I went for a two mile jog on Monday and after a summer of nothing but riding, that run made my quads sore as all get out.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirtl. damn i couldn't sit or get up for a week+. Running after not running for years and without stretching and without proper shoes is painful.

Yes, definitely put in the miles. Especially the long runs. Cannot stress that enough. As a cyclist you'll have the aerobic endurance but you need to get your joints used to the stress of 26.2 miles of pavement.
