Mountain Biking - Noob question

Ok....well i use to BMX and i wanted to start Mountain Biking...im totally new...so which should i get...im good at riding BMX but lost in Mountain Biking...i will be later attempting drops and some of the more extreme stuff...PLEASE HELP!!!:) What Bike should i get?

Weight? Height? Price? Type of riding?

ok...150 pounds, 5 foot 5,0-200 dollars...im confused about the type....like what is free riding...is that like the jumps and cliffs and that? well either Trials or Free riding

You can find some good deals on ebay if you look hard enough. I bought a brand new trek 4300 on ebay for $200 a couple months ago. Its certianly not top of the line, but for a beginner (like myself) it does a decent job.

I'm not sure if the 4300 will stand up the freeriding, try something more beefy...

If you're new to mountain biking, don't even think about the big stuff yet!

Think about cross country and maybe all mountain, not freeride or downhill yet. Get used to the idea of riding over logs and down thin switchbacks first ;)

Treks are decent and look for a hardtail, decent fox/rockshox fork (I'd personally go with marzocchi but I rarely seem them OEM on entry bikes), disc brakes (BB7s are great) and shimano or SRAM drivetrain. One or the other, try to get a drivetrain all from the same family. It generally works better.

Also, nothing beats going to a local bike shop and flat saying "What's a good entry level bike that will also help put me at a good foundating for freeriding so I can do some before having to upgrade?"

ok thanks defiance...problem is that the bike store near me is owned by a frined of mine...im 14 hes like 30...hes heavy into bmx and will probally try to convince me not to do it...by the way...can you give me a better description of what freeriding is?i have like a low vision of what it is...

Freeride refers to a type of mountain bike riding style. Freeride usually involves large drops, jumps, and manmade stunts. The trails are often accessed by shuttle or ski lift but can be pedaled as well. Freeride bikes usually have large amounts of suspension travel and are built to take a beating...

OP: DONT buy a bike on the drivetrain...you buy a bike on 4 things and 4 things only:

1. Fit
2. Frame
3. Fork
4. Rims

You wont find a decent bike under $200, unless it's used. Bmx can be found in this price range, but even good bmx's are more than $500. A 'decent' mountain bike starts around $600(cdn). If you plan on riding hard, and wont spend much on a bike, you'll have the bike broken in no time.

In Australia, you get decent mountain bike at $500AUD +, BUT bikes from $400+ can still be found.

Well, I'm sorry to say but a same-name drivetrain set doesn't equal better perfomance, I would rather have SRAM shifters, derailleur and chain (powerlink) but I would rather have my cassete be Shimano and my crankset be Shimano too or something like FSA or RaceFace.

My whole drivetrain is Shimano (crank is SRAM though) and it sucks, my friend has a nice Shimano/SRAM combo on his bike and it works BETTER than mine.

So yeah, get best part for each individual drivetrain part independent of its brand and you'll get the best performing drivetrain set possible, I guarantee.

More rubbish. Firstly you cannot use SHIMANO shifters on a SRAM rear derailuure, they arn't compatible. But SRAM's Attack shifters are a 2:1 ratio compatible with Shimano rear deraillures.

So tell me, if I was to use SRAM Attack shifters with a Shimano XT Rear Deraillure...why wouldn't it work as good?

hahahha sorry i havent posted...i went up to whistler wth no acces to internet...i did a bit of MTN biking and saw the bike park there but i only did some downhill...I HAVE NEW RESPECT FOR THE PRO FREERIDERS tht stuff was insane...i also realized how much the bikes were...Hello Ebay!
