Foo - Currentlt getting owned by windows media player

Whenever I try to watch any video from the internet on any site such as putfile or even a video that I save to play offline it does this. It says "connecting to media" at the status bar at the bottom and then after a few seconds of that it just says "ready". Ok so then I push play and it just repeats that cycle of "connecting to media" then "ready", thus making me not be able to watch videos . I even tried to install the new windows media 11. It downloads the installer from microsoft but then when I run it, it says something like "You are not running windows xp media center" but wtf I AM!

Anyone know what might be wrong?

Sorry I don't know squat but would help if I did! I've had problems with my wp and asked friends about it. A couple are real good with comps.

They saiud that maybe wp hasn't been updated or I don't have the latest version.

Said you can go to the windows site and download the lat4st version for free. One guy said he thinks it's up to media player 10, whatever that means. I've been hesitant to download....ok really, I've been too lazy to do it!:D

Maybe try downloading the newest version? Just a thought!

i think you can make it use real player but i have no idea how.......but there are plenty of smart people on these forums, someone will tell you my tomorrow morning im sure

Real player is the most bloated piece of **** on this planet. Pickup VLC player, or my favourite BSplayer.

Another vote for BSPlayer and VLC. BS has been the best with subtitles for me. I've had problems with choppy playback from my hard drive with a lot of players, but VLC plays everything smooth. The only thing I don't like is that I can't figure out what the shortcut is to leave fullscreen - I have to alt+tab to switch to the main controller and close it...

The Mac version is good stuff.

I like the Media Player classic, works fine on my laptop for playing vid's, CDs, DVDs, etc. Very no frills and doesn't take 20 seconds to start like most players.

2. Under the Content category, click Media Types.
3. In the Media Types dialog box, choose Make RealPlayer my Universal Media Player, then click OK.


Sometimes you may also have to disable the file types in other media players for the changes to take place. For example, to configure your RealPlayer to play Windows Media streams, you must first disable the Windows Media Player.

To disable the file types in Windows Media Player:

1. Open Windows Media Player.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Options.
3. Click the File Types tab.
4. Uncheck all the boxes, then click OK to save the changes.

Gah, it didn't work. The real player installed right and I set it on the universal media setting then I unchecked all the boxes for the windows player but it still uses windows media for streaming sites.

VLC Player's better for playing an embedded video inside your browser. All the instructions are on the videolan.org (http://www.videolan.org) site. Basically a 2-step process. You install the VLC player first, which gives you the option of making VLC the default media player for Windows. Then you copy the browser plug-in into your browsers plug-ins folder.

Tried that and still dosen't work.

VLC is quite nice.
I used MP player for streaming videos. And XINE for anything downloaded

Try viewing the source, find the source for the streaming video, copy the URL. In Windows Media Player, under the File menu, select Open from URL, paste the URL you copied into the proper line, after it finishes downloading, use the Save As function. It always works for me.

Gah, I don't want to download and sites like putfile you can't download from anyway. Also thats too much work to fix a problem that shouldn't be happening.
