One of the bikes in my stable is a 1992 Rocky Mountain Vertex that I used to race cross country with back in the day. I put a Rock Shox Mag20 on it when I bought it in 1993, and I've been wondering about how to upgrade to a newer fork with better action and a little more travel. Most of the feedback I've had to date is of the "buy a new bike" sort, but I really like the frame and the feel of the bike. I've got other newer bikes, but I'm attached to this one and would like to continue riding it for years to come.

Any thoughts or insight?

Hmmm, something that old may have a 1" steerer tube. I don't think there are any forks that are made with a 1" steerer tube these days other than in road bike applications. I could be wrong.

If your bike can take a 1 1/8" then there's no problem getting a new fork. Just remember to keep the same travel length on it otherwise the geometry will change.

i think suntour makes some decent modern 1" forks

About a year abo I decided to upgrade a MTB that had a 1" threaded steer tube. At that time, RST was making some forks with 1" threaded steer tubes. I landed up buying a Suntour SR3000 from NYC bikes. Its a low end fork but they sell them for under $40 so for the money, they are worth it. I'm not sure if Suntour is still making 1" steer tube on their higher end forks. Other than that, ebay is your best bet.
