The stock Avid 6 Shorty pads squeek like mad, I've played with them and can't seem make any improvement. Breaking performance is fine, but I'm ready to try different pads. I like the cartridge style pad Avid uses, but don't if anyone makes a compatible cartridge. Any thoughts?

Thanks - John

Sorry about the typo, need to not surf until I rest.

Mods please correct...

Make sure brake (or break?) pads and rims are 'clean'. Use rubbing alcohol to clean rims; pads should be inspected for possible debris caught in the pad surface.
Also re-angling the pads can make a difference.

yeah, i put on a set of mavic open pro/ultegra on my commuter bike. got it cheap at performance. nice new 06 rims, but they must not have machined/cleaned them well -- i got tons of little metal shards deposited into my brake pads! i cleaned them twice, using sand paper and a small screw driver to get out the shards. after that i just gave up and put on a new set of pads... hopefully most of the metal that's going to come off has already come off!

Yes, pads are crummy. You should be able to swap them for pretty much any other aftermarket pad, or even a shimano pad (though this will probably necessitate changing the shoes as well) if needed. Pink Kool Stops are supposed to be good. I've also had success with Aztek pads on other weak / squeaky brakes. See what your LBS has in stock.

Kool Stops are very good. The stock ones on my XT brakes are very good as well, better than what came on the Single Digit Sevens they replaced.

Well the dealer didn't have any selection, they only carried XTR and Ritchey cartridges. The service guy said XTR pads were a little softer and the Ritchey had the same compound as the Avids I had. So I bought the XTR's. He also suggested using a little steel wool on the rims so I'll give them a light scuff after I clean them.

Thanks for the help.

John

P.S. I'm going to another dealer Sat., so I'll see if they have the Kool Stop pads...

We've ridden a couple of tandems with the Avid shorty brakes and both of them made a sound to raise the dead. I changed pads a few times, but the noise always returned very quickly. We have had much better luck with the Avid Single Digit 7 on our current tandem. I don't know if the shorty brakes are more prone to squeeking or if the Bontrager wheels on those tandems are more prone to squeeking, but it sure was annoying!
