Mountain Biking - Tires Tires Tires!!!!

Hi all

I got a pair of RollX Specialized tires. I got 100miles on the tires and the rear tire's knobs begin to peel off!!!! what a crap...i had several years ago a pair of ritchey tires (1993) and they lasted me 5 years with the same type of riding ...anyway....
I am looking at Panaracer FIREXC pro folding 2.1 and Panaracer Trailblaster 1.95 folding. Any ideas? I can get the FireXC for 30$ less per pair than the Trailblasters...due to some discount i have on a shop that has the FireXC in stock. All terain is what i need except for tarmac...i dont do tarmac... and i am an XC aggresive rider.

The FireXC's would probably be a good bet, especially if you can get them at a discount. Are you really concerned about weight? I have always had good luck with most every pair of Michelins I have owned. You might also want to check out some Continentals if your looking for something real knobby. Check out mtbr.com to see about complaints about wear problems with the tires you choose since that seems to be an issue. I think there are also quite a few lengthy discussions about tires for different conditons on the forums. Might be worth a search also.

I am not familiar with the RollX but they might be a soft compound rubber that you would only want to use if racing or you need alot of grip. If they are a soft compound and you ride them on the road they will wear out fast and yes, the knobs could start to tear off.

I use a Fire XC 2.1 out here in Northern California and love it. It hooks up on anything. We rode last weekend and came accross a muddy steep hill to climb and I was the only one of 6 of us who rode up the 50 foot section. I am sold on it.

Sounds like you skid your tires rather than roll through obstacles due to the wear being solely on the rear tire. The Roll X is a soft compound tire and would tend to wear more quickly. However, this sounds more like poor technique rather than poor tires.

5 years! I get 3-8 weeks out of my mtb tyres!

Poor technique?????? guess not... i am in the sport for 11 years...i am not the best rider around...but i can hold my own...so poor technique is not in the menu... poor tires for the UK conditions maybe...

i was talkin to skdsl. As for UK conditions you guys have some of the worst soil conditions anywhere and it's always wet there. Try lookin at some mud tires from Intense, Michelin, or WTB

generally I don't skid, but the occasional lock up is unavoidable. The soil around here is very abrasive and I ride pretty hard. I would think that skidding would result in uneven wear (flat spots) which I don't get.

That being said, if you don't get some drift you aren't riding hard enough!

I think the Panaracer Trailblasters suck, personally. They're awful in the sand, and way too narrow for my tastes. I like the XC Pro much better.

fire xc pro's are the way to go. I race and rode on set for a whole year and that's a lot of abuse. Included 2 24 hour races and 1 12 hour.
The really light Specialized tires are usually the soft compound ones and they are "race day only" tires. I went through 2 or 3 sets in one race season (master team control s- works)

Raiyn nice answer....i hope that you are very happy with your own riding skills...

I make it a point to not trash a company, and defend those companies that I've had success with. However, there are always, ALWAYS, incidences that result in a bad product. I've had my share of knobbies being ripped off tires. I had a pair that came on my wife's bike and she didn't like the reddish (more Clay colored) of the sidewalls. I bought her some blackwalls, and she was happy.

I put her tires on my bike. After two rides, I had ripped off about 7 of the side knobs. I figured it was because I was must've had a bad batch of tires. I took them back and they warrantied them for me because the knew I had just put them on. Guess what, the second set did the same thing. I switched back to my favorite brand and haven't had problems since.

I have had numerous tires, including Specialized tires. Of all the tires I've used, Specialized rank up there as one of my Top 3. I suggest you take them back and see if they'll warranty them for you. It's worth a shot, sure, they might say "no", but they might say, "Yes". Try a different tread pattern, or go from gumwalls to blackwalls.
