Commuting - where did they all come from

Well today of course it is July 4th and I decide to ride my bike down to the party that all of my workmates are having and normally the area in Oceanside near coast highway are only occupied by the occasional club rides or fully kitted roadies but today i was having trouble with a total phenomenon there are MORE BIKES THAN CARS i mean i know why i ride day in and day out kinda car-lite you know but i mean where do these people keep all these bikes locked away until a day like today when there is no parking anywhere they came out IN droves i mean it was def. enjoyable seeing new and old bikes out and about. The bike lane full (cute girls in short beach skirts:) riding fixed beach cruisers) but what happens after today do they hide the bike away until next year?:eek: Oh yes and I'm new to Cali been here two months via south Carolina ????

I had the opposite problem yesterday. I only saw a few cyclists. I guess everyone was out of town.

I have a related question. In my neighborhood I see lots of bikes in garages/carports and lots of cars with bike racks, but rarely see anyone riding. Why do these people have bikes and/or bike racks if they don't ride?

Don't you know you can loose weight just by having a bike?
I believe the same idea works with exercise equipment.

Are you seriously coming on to the "commuting" board to say that a bike is a toy?
I don't rely on toys when I need to get from A to B. My bike is an efficient, utilitarian tool in every sense of the word and even if I never rode it until July 4th, when I decide I need something to get me down to the fireworks display, would I not be using it as a tool then?

I believe he was stating that the average person views a bike as a toy. I would not say that bike commuters are average. We are a significant minority.
