Commuting - Article in July/Aug Utne Reader
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I read a pretty good article in Utne the other day about Latino commuters in CA. "Invisable Riders" I believe was the title...I believe it appeared in Bicycling originally last year.

that article was taken from bicycling magazine actually.
they had a great couple months where thay actually did several articles a month on commuting!
i used to really hate that magazine but lataly they seem like they are finally upping the "content" to more than just bike shootouts and fitness articles.

I so want a subscription to Velo Vision. It's just so expensive. We really need an American cycling magazine like that.

I see lots of Latino immigrant commuters on bikes and rollerblades. Many are on their way to/from jobs that don't pay much so riding a bike makes good economic sense.

We see them in this area as well. The only complaint I have is that they ride with no helmet on the sidewalk with and against traffic and use the cross walks as extended bike paths paying little attention to traffic rules / laws.
I have been encouraged lately seeing them ride at night with blinkies and small lights.
It is unfortunate that the selection of bikes at the local Wally World is limited to 47 pound full suspension mountain bikes. They would be so much better off with a good commuter type bike like one sees in China, India or many other developing nations.
Here it is:
Bicycling coalitions need to do a better job of serving people who ride out of necessity. Bilingual materials would be a good start.

Thanks for the link. It's definitely a good point of view to remember, especially for us suburban "bike commuters by choice". I agree with bbonnn.
