What if around the halfway point of flatish races there was a jackpot of large time bonuses. Something along the order of 60 seconds for winner, 54,48,42,36,30,24,18,12,6 for 2nd to 10th.
It would reward everyone on a breakaway, maybe encourage more of them. It wouldn't make so much of a difference if you are 1st or 4th accross the line on the crossing point, just that you are part of the breakaway group.
It seems like there are too many teams with sprinting contenders who will work together to catch breaks, and if this jackpot only counted for GC only, or a "breakaway/combativity points" jersey, then the sprinters wouldn't get too bothered about it.
Has this idea been tried in a national tour type race?
