some fella rode a highwheeler across america over 100 years ago as a publicity stunt, east coast to san francisco i believe, somewhat endorsed by by colonel Pope's bicycle company. his journal was recently put into print, i found it at the public library.

he didn't accept any money for the ride, so methinks the fella exhibited a classic, early, case of bicyclists 'wanderwheel. one of the early, early mountain bikers :)

Crazy looking bikes. They get to look down on everyone, including cars.
I don't get their charity though. Is it themselves! Why do people list things like this as charity. Sounds like begging for $$ so they can play. Sorry one of my pet peeves. I hate to see kids at the corner begging for money so they can go play in a basketball tournament.

Don't worry, they're not begging! If you check out the "manifesto" link on their web page you'll see where the cash is going to. They're all worthy causes, and all bicycle related. So you can happily donate some money and know that not only are you doing a good deed, but that you are directly facilitating someone else's enjoyment of the humble bicycle. And hey, perhaps your cash will even get someone on a bike who wouldn't have had the resources to buy one themself...

Oh, and while we're on the subject, I would like to bring your attention to yet another cycle related project:

http://www.benbikes.org.za/namibia/index.htm

Bicycling Empowerment Network Namibia is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to empower people through the use and sale of recycled bikes...which are shipped from Re-Cycle in England.
Sorry to deviate from the main point of this thread, but I just wanted to point out to those of you with spare coins in your pocket that there are many many worthy causes. Donate to them all!

And oh, I nearly forgot...well done tall bike guys. Keep pedalling!
