Hi all,
My wife and I are considering venturing into the tandem world. As this is new for us, we are thinking about going with a used bike first to minimize cost and to see if we really like it enough to stick with it. I have located in the local area a 2002 Raleigh SC. What are your opinions on this particular bike as a starter? Is it reliable, suitable for beginners to judge tandeming, and a good place to start? And, what is a reasonable price range? They are asking around 400.00. Seems to be in great condition. Thanks in advance. I know this is an awfully general question, but I guess I am looking for whether this is a good starter, or whether there are known issues about this brand/model that should keep me away. Thanks again.

take a test ride and see if the bike fits-sounds like a good price if it does. if it doesn't fit you guys well no price is good.

Ride it. Does it fit? Is it in great/vey good condition? Is it within your budget? If these answers are 'yes' . . .
Doesn't hurt to make an offer . . .

Thanks, I will try it for fit. What I am looking for is opinions regarding the quality and durability of that brand/model and year bike. I know Raleigh was a great brand years ago, but is it now? And, are their tandems durable, or should I look elsewhere? Are there "lemons" in entry level tandems? I have seen used ones go for around 500. or thereabouts on ebay. Any experience or advice is appreciated.

I cannot speak to reliability , but I did rent a Raleigh tandem for a ride in san Francisco a couple of years ago- it rode fine. Local bike store here still pushes raleigh road bikes so I imagine the are ok. You might inquire at the tandem@hobbes forum, many tandem riders there and several people have mentioned they are generally happy with them. At this price I imagine you will be fine if a test ride goes ok. Even if you decide to resell in a year you should get close to this price, just check for obvious damage and fit. Be advised that the first few rides for a new team can be nerve wracking- there is a learning curve with two bodies trying to balance on the biike.
