Mountain Biking - Rock + Helmet = New helmet shopping

Just got a rather large dent in helmet, not in head but I think I have a concussion. Need a new one (helmet and head). SOmething with good ventilation and lightweight. Money really no object. I've only had Bell helmets until now, but will try anything. Anybody have some nice XC helmet in mind?

If you like the fit of the Bell helmets, try the Sweep (R or XC). It's lightweight, comfy and well ventilated.

For what it is worth, I bought a Specialized – Instinct at the beginning of the summer and I have no complaints about the helmet. I tried on several helmets at three LBSs previous to my purchase. It was the best fitting of the bunch, so it was the one for me. The Giro Xen was second runner up, but it did not fit as well on my melon.

If you like the fit of the Bell helmets, try the Sweep (R or XC). It's lightweight, comfy and well ventilated.

+1 on the Sweep XC.

I have been happy with my Bell Ghisallo. It's pretty lightweight and has good ventilation. If I were to buy a helmet now though I would probably choose to go with a Sweep R because its lighter, has more vents and it just looks cooler. Well, you don't want to get one of the recalled ones, that would be silly! :rolleyes: No, they're not pretty - they're EUROTRASH!!!!

Go to your lbs, try all the helmets on, buy the one that fits the best.

Not good advice. I've never required the protection my helmet provides, but I've had several instances where low branches hit the visor and were deflected before they could hit my eyes. I have a road helmet too, but I would not even think about using it on a trail.

Get a Giro Xen for $60 from Ediscountbike.com. I just did!

I went to my LBS, which happens to be where I work, and ended up ordering the Specialized Decibel (because we didn't have a small). It has awesome venting, carbon fiber (!), and is pretty light. I tried the sweep (r and xc) and it was pretty nice, but it made me look like Sonic the hedgehog :o

Sonic is so cool though! Decibal looks like a sweet helmet too. I like the huge vents.

Actually, it's great advice. If you don't want a branch in the eye, wear some sunglasses or maybe pay attention to what's in front of you. Actually, that might be your problem - the visor blocks your view of the immobile tree branch as you ride into it. :roflmao:
