Ok, a friend of mine gave me an brooks seat. He said that he had just treated it (I'm assuming with something like the Brooks saddle stuff) when he gave it to me. Well, he's out of town for a while so I can't ask him this question. I put the seat on and rode around. I've noticed that it leaves a light brown, dirt like, stain on my shorts through the butt/crotch area. I haven't washed my shorts yet to see if the stain comes out (i'm hoping it does). I'm wondering if this is normal or if I should have given the seat a thorough cleaning before using it or what? I'd hate to think I'm going to end up with a brown bottom every time I condition this seat. For that matter, how often should I condition it? I'm posting to this forum because I'm assuming more of you have brooks saddles than probably anyone else. PLEASE HELP!!!

OMFG get to the hospital...NOW!!! :p
Yes, Brooks saddles can stain your britches, but in my experience only when new or when an excessive amount of proofide has been applied and not completely sucked up/wiped off. You only need to treat the saddle once every 6 months to a year or so and you should not use an excessive amount of proofide when you do. I get no staining at all from any of my saddles.
If you go to http://www.wallbike.com you can find some good info on the care and feeding of Brooks saddles.
FWIW, it will come oput after a couple of washings.
This is why I wear black bike shorts :P

Thanks! I didn't notice it the first day when I had on dark shorts but then I wore some tan shorts and at the end of the day wondered how many people saw me and thought "don't get too close to that guy"...
:)
heh, my saddle is green, so it really looked like something was wrong when i wore some khaki colorer shorts
