View Full Version : I need to improve

I catch myself doing rolling stops at stop signs, passing cars in sub divisions and so on.
I find that I out accelerate cars at lights, so they shouldn't mind if I come to a full stop.
Also my speeding in subdivisions is a bad habbit.
I have been bad.

Confess your faults one to another,...........
I figure if I can do better to be polite to motorists, they may treat cyclists better.

Yes it is.
Mucho Niños.
I think we all develop bad habits (and not just in our riding). One of mine is that I sometimes ride on sidewalks if I think the road is too narrow for comfort even though, in general, I think it's a dangerous practice for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
This is almost like confession; I actually feel lighter...

What bad habits? You are doing nothing different from most car drivers. They don't make complete stops, they pass in subdivisions. Sheesh, you don't need to go to confession or seek absolution for your sins as long as you feel safe with how you are riding.

Join the club! (At least it's good that we still know we've been bad... :D )

Do we look like priests here?
My sin is I don't ride VC 100% of the time. Ouch! Damn! That lightning really hurts!

I'm not a priest, but I do play one sometimes when watching TV. Diane, out of my concern for you, allow me caution you that not riding VC 100% of the time is pretty darn close to unforgivable. It's really almost as bad as riding on Sunday.

My biggest sin: I grumble every time some impatient coworker of mine decides to pass me on the 1/4 mile long 20mph driveway leaving work just to stop right in front of me at the exit. Even more grumbling is done when they pull onto the left side of the road to pass when I'm stopping at the stop sign 100 yards before the exit (where the visitor parking lot is). None of this causes me any harm so I shouldn't care but I do. I want to personally remind each and everyone of them that just because I'm only going 18mph in the 20mph driveway that that doesn't make it "right" for them to pass me. I know for a fact they won't pass me in a car doing the same speed. For the little fit that I throw in my head when this happens, I ask for forgiveness.

Do you think you need to improve because what you do is not safe, or because it doesn't measure up to some ideal you have? The former is a good reason; the latter, unnecessary in some cases, IMHO. For example, I'll roll through a stop sign if I've slowed enough that I could stop if I needed to, but verified that it is clear in all directions. Speeding and passing may or may not be okay, I don't know exactly what your situation is.
There's also the consideration that you are setting an example and modelling proper behavior for others, which could argue for doing it just because it's right, regardless of if it's needed for safety in that particular case or not. But that can be situational, too. I'm more likely to stop at a stop sign when I'm with my kids, to model it for them, or if there are cars around even if they are not at the intersection yet, to attempt at least to increase their respect for cyclists in general or me in particular. But if no one at all is around, why bother? (Of course, someone could still be looking out a window of their house at me, etc.)

I asked the city to repair the raised sidewalk on a bridge... they spent a week fixing the sidewalks on all four bridges in the section. Smooth as silk now. However, I decided that riding the sidewalk then crossing traffic there is even more dangerous than the narrow lanes, so I ride the street.
I felt guilty about that until now :)

Hey, this could be fun. Let me try...
Lately I've been blowing this stop sign. Not rolling through, but really hammering through it. But I have an excuse. This stop sign is at the end of the street where I live, and I know for a fact it used to be a "yield" sign--it was that way for years. Then some upstart newcomers got the notion to change it without asking me, the guy who's lived there longer than just about anybody. Well, I played along for a while, but now it's payback time...
...and I'm NOT SORRY!

Or more aptly, if you were on a motorcycle.
It's just some sorta mental block with cagers, they just can't be behind a cyclist. Even when I'm speeding around town (ok... 35k in a 30k) they STILL need to get around center-laned me

Heh then your left waiting for them to get moving.
Rolling through stop signs is the most over-rated sin since masturbation. Neither is as harmful as zealots make out, nor as much fun as real sin..
My worst sin is yelling cuss words wihen I see cager stupidity. I heartily repent of this and vow to sin no more....

Just think of it this way: you did a favor for all of the wheelchair-bound, blind, and unsure-footed people in your area.

Rolling stop signs is rather akin to speeding. In both cases there is a clear line. The full stop and the exact number of the posted limit. But really neither is all that bad being just over the line. But both can get to a 'sin' level. Blowing stopsigns and hitting 60 in a 35 zone are both pretty stupid and dangerous.

Notice i said "rolling through" stop signs. Riding through one too fast is self-destructive. But I think we all see the difference.
