The stem threads have stirred up an interesting question in my head. I have a 1" carbon threadless steerer. Many stems these days are being made for 1-1/8" steerers but come supplied with a shim to allow them to work with 1" steerers. This is probably no big deal with steel or aluminum steerer tubes but is it advisable to use them on carbon? Will one be able to tighten them enough to prevent slipping yet not apply too much compression to introduce crushing? I'm assuming the answer is yes but thought I'd ask if anyone had any practical experiences.

No problems.

Like Pokey said, no problems. You're not going to be applying much more clamping force, if any. Carbon steerers have the compression plug inside (as opposed to the star fangled nut we all know and love) which acts as reinforcement.

There are no problems.

One thing to note is to get a top cap that is 1 1/8". Sometimes you may end up with a 1" cap that will not really tighten the headset. I seen many mechanics spend countless hours wondering what is happening and it is simply that fact.
