Road Cycling - My First Metric

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know this is not much to many of you here :D :D , but I am so happy that I completed my first metric today.
I am building up to my first century, but was really happy to hit that first mark!. The only brutal thing is that we had 12-15 mph headwinds which made it rough.
Dont think I would have had near as much fun if some of the regulars from my weekly club ride were not there.

That's great! It's an special feeling to do something that most non-cyclists just don't even understand. If you can do a metric, belive me, you can do an English.
I did my first metric on November 24, 2002, about six weeks after I started cycling. I did my first English century just three weeks later on a windy day near Charleston, SC. I've done two more since then, including my first solo yesterday.
It's also nice to see that you had fun. That's what this is all about, right?
Peace,
Lou

Congrats!
I have been riding now for about 8 months, and my longest ride to date is 43 miles. Its been so cold that I haven't really pushed to see what I can ultimately do, but hope to try a metric century soon.

shok,
I did most of my riding alone, and then joined a local cycling club, and it is really great.
Give it a try,
Mike
I completed my first metric today
 CONGRATULATIONS !
I remember my first metric - not an organized event - just a solo ride, but it felt great!
I have not done an English yet, but that's on of this years goals. I'm going to make my first English century on the club's organized ride so that I have a shirt to commemorate the event.

Are there any cycling clubs in your area?
Have you asked about group rides at one of the LBS in your area?
Group rides are more fun (and sometimes more challenging) than solo rides.

I too would definately reccomend joining up with a club. I have to drive about 35 minutes to catch up with the club for rides (Nope, I dont have it in me to ride 34 miles each way and then do a ride)
I can honestly say this has really added quite a bit of enjoyment to riding. The people are great and very motivating. I doubt I would have gotten to the metric if I did not have them to motivate me. (And vise versa)
I had two riding partners near home, but neither of them are all that dependable. I found that if they started to slack I did too. (But felt like a slug after...:)

Congratulations. After doing some math, I came very close to a metric century, but fell short by like 3 miles. If I had thought about it then, I definately would have put forth the extra effort so I could make the same claim myself. But alas, I'm not quite there myself.
I also am very much enjoying the club rides I have just started doing. I didn't see much of a point of it before, but now I am really glad I tried it. It makes things far more enjoyable, even if you don't have much conversation during the ride.
