60 out of how many?

my point exactly. whether you take that demographic slice from the total number of cyclists in the city or the number of people who own/ride track bikes...it's a marginal number, and while it may swell for moments, it'll always taper back down to that number. unless you really, truly love riding a track bike, you'll move on to something more practical pretty quickly. no fad is worth that much effort.

i don't know, but in NYC, how many people *from* NYC come out to alleycats? around 60?

i'd say ten tops unless you're counting transplants :)

Who cares about the wall street journal, there was a thread a little while ago about a fixed-gear fashion piece in SPIN. SPIN actually caters to the demographics that will bring this way downhill, WSJ, eh, no biggie.

riding in any way that would give you a substantial rush in the locations with chaos conducive to such rushes is certainly fun, but what percentage of people actually have the patience to build the skills to get to the point where they feel like they're having the sorts of fun that they might imagine would be associated with anything "hip" or "cool" and aren't just concerned with making it in one piece to where ever it is that they were riding?

most people i meet who don't ride fixed are usually very interested in my bike and how i ride it. never had anyone make fun. i think it depends a lot on how you roll. i don't take it too seriously or think riding a track bike makes me cool. the people that do tend to be the ones that get ridiculed, and rightfully so.

good point.. a smart man once said "fashion is like a shaka, the harder you throw it, the stupider you look" i guess the same could be said about track bikes.

why the hell would I want to keep bike riding a secret?

give that man a beer. if other people can feel the same joy that I and so many others do from the pure unadulterated fun of riding a fixed wheel bike, then the world is a better place for it.

the more bikers the better!

How many riders are there in a typical NYC alleycat?

There is definitely the fad factor. Didn't roadbikes become the rage when Lance started winning Tours, but then mountain bikes took over as the new fad and also b/c they were more practical for most common folk? (or was it the other way around, mountain first and then roadbikes took over?)

Right now there is a fixed gear craze going on, for some it will stick, others will move on. It is like the guy who still has his hair feathered back and drives an I-Roc, it was cool once and it stuck with him.

biking is really cool, no matter what... if it's gonna be a trend, then that rules.. more bikers = less cars = safer riding for everyone!

who cares if people laugh at ss/fixed gear biking.. we like it, right?

a track bike is that really sweet, but incredibly ******** neighbor-kid who loves you unconditionally, but could need you to wipe his ass or help him retrieve his swallowed tongue from his throat with little to no notice.

No way man, a track bike is like that kid who lived out in the woods growing up and don't need no help from nobody, and he laughs at sissy, delicate derailleurs. YEAH.

How long have track/fixed-gear bikes been a "fad" in NY? 'Cuz, in OC SoCal, I'm on the cutting edge riding my fixie. I figure the wave that is leaving NY is just hitting OC so I wanna know how long I have until I'm at the height of trendy coolness, and then my inevitable fall from grace.

A lot of roadies I know who live in the city are getting them because it's just all stop lights and heavy traffic which make their cervelo an expensive piece of overkill. They'll get a stock Mercier or Bianchi and not worry so much about maintainance.

"For men, the bikes present another
challenge: Because riders can't stand up in the saddle to coast, long
rides can result in reduced blood flow to the reproductive organs,
which studies suggest may lead to impotence."

if this were indeed true, would you still ride? would ya?? :) :)

i'd make the sacrifice...

What about adult tricycles? That'd be fun. We could all dress up like the Monopoly man, the womens could wear dresses, dickies would be dickies again and not pants, and we could all ride down to the park for a nice box social, excluding anyone without a monacle & a tophat.

there are elitists in every walk of life...hell, I've already been confronted w/ some of those ******bags on this forum...i've been riding a bicycle since I was like 6 or 7 years old...and guess what, it was a fixed geared huffy...who the **** cares...I ride a bike because it's fun as hell...always have...then I come on here asking if my new bike would be worth converting to a fixie, and I got flamed for it...newsflash, fixed geared bikes have been around since the 1800s...none of you ****ers started it...if you're riding a bike because you think you look cool, think again...a lot of people think it's dorky as hell...**** snobs...**** elitists...

wow...sounds like somebody need a track bike.

ATTENTION ALL FIXED GEAR RIDERS.

Since our hobby has been discovered by the mainstream, I got a memo from the director of all things cool and he predicts that in two years, penny farthing big wheel 1800's bikes will be all the rage.

In response to this, I am going to reccomend you all sell your chromes and reloads and use the money to buy black suits and derbys.

Please restrict yourself from going to alleycats and only ride around the park and have picnics.
