Commuting - New Bike Racks At Work

My cubicle had been made smaller so I could no longer park my bike in there.
I had been gently nagging the facilities manager to move the bike racks from a hidden and obscure location to an area near the front doors in view of the Security Desk. Yesterday they came to my desk to get my input on where to install the new hitchin posts.

We now have 2 new posts directly in front of the lobby windows... one on either side of the entry doors. I think the Managers view them as a trophy to their commitment for supporting the environment.[while they continue to drive their tanks to work] I view them as a place to keep my bike where it won't get ripped off.

Anybody else had some success getting your company to support your bike commuting ?
Have your requests been recieved well ?

I lucked out in that car parking here is scarce, as well as a company comittment to supporting the environment. I get used as the lone example on conf calls dealing with either.:rolleyes:

When my company moved offices I made sure they factored in the need for showers, room to store clothing and my bike. It worked out great as I am the only person out of 8 that rides so I have a shower and bathroom all to myself. I also got an office big enough that I can store my bike next to my desk rather than having to carry it down to the basement every day.

I am spoilt I know!

Yeah , my Director wanted me to park my bike in her office when my cube got the shrinkdown. I didn't feel right about that... although it was a nice offer from an exceptional person. I'm pretty confident she was pushing the issue with the site manager for me as well.

At my work, there are 3 buildings on a block of industrial area.

There are approximately 500 employees.

4 of us ride.

The bike rack is ouside, around back, near the loading dock of the middle building.

Its a lonely rack.

I get a huge storage closet in the back of the building to park my bike. I have one of the few keys that opens that door =)

I am the only person that rides to work. A few months ago I saw 1 bicycle on a lonely bike rack that they have, but I never saw it again after that one time.......

My office is large enough to store my bike in. I'm the systems/database administrator, so they give me the windowless office next to the elevator and bathrooms. Not only do I have my bike in here, but I have 7 computers and other related hardware. I also have students that work with me that I share the office with.

Our lab has approx. 60 people. I know of at least 6 people who ride into work. At least 2 other people have said they are getting inspired to start commuting (at least part time) via bike.

A few months ago I saw 1 bicycle on a lonely bike rack that they have, but I never saw it again after that one time.......

Someone probably stole it.

1 / 8 = 12.5%... waaaaay better than most companies. My last company was 1.25 commuters (I'm counting another guy as a .25... he commuted every once in a while. I commuted almost daily) for 80-some-odd people in the building... that's 1.5%.

My current company is downtown in the city, so it bucks the trend... with 10 people we have 3 commuters (counting myself, although I'm currently only commuting 1-way each day because I haven't adapted yet to the longer commute). And of the remaining 7 people, I know 1 takes the bus and 1 walks, so at most we've got 50% car commuters.

my company has 10 employees in its one office (the one I work in anyway), 3 of us commute via bike. 6 others by train, and 1 by car. The only "bike facilities" we have is a lamppost outside the front door of the office.

However we are moving soon to a 2 floor dedicated office affair where we'll merge together with another part of the company, I am hoping that they cater more for us bike commuters when we move to the new building :)

Of ~30 people there are approx 8 dedicated (ride the vast majority of days) and another 6+ who ride a third-of-the-time or better... a lot of bikes sit around in the office (maybe 15-20 on any given day), where ever they will fit.....it helps that the office director does at least a morning exercise ride on his roadbike even on the days he must drive. Gotta love Santa Cruz, CA.

Sadly, I got those numbers beat down. Only one rider (me), out of the 187 at my faciity and the 980 in the area, and 2315 in the region.

Sigh.

I've been with my employer at the same office for the last 6 years. When I first started here the building was almost empty so I was able to leave my bicycle unlocked in the lobby by the guards desk. As more and more people were relocated to this office they ended up putting a bike rack outisde. So I locked my bike outside for years before finding a couple racks indoors. Whoops my mistake.

We have roughly 700 employees in our office, plus another company still occupies space on the 2nd floor. I know of maybe a handfull of regular bicycle commuters. Talk aobut a poor showing

Our building (maybe 400 people) has good shower facilities but only one other bike commuter (and I haven't seen him the last few weeks, so maybe it's down to just me.

I have it made where I work. There are about 100 people and I am the only one that bikes to work. I work in the shipping/receiving area and get to put my bike next to my work station. We have locker rooms with showers. They started a"wellness" program at work and the grand prize is a Trek mountain bike. Most people at figure that it will be mine. What they did was hand out pedometers for those that we interested and we track out steps each day for 12 weeks. There is a conversion for biking to walking steps. The goal is to do 10,000 steps a day of about 5 miles.

BUT... just because they're in front of security, doesn't mean you should rest easy. Remember- I had my wheel stolen (worth hundreds) RIGHT IN FRONT OF SECURITY. In fact, while the guy was stealing the wheel, the security officer was walking past. Neither of them paused- and that security officer knew I was the owner of that bike. He just couldn't care less. *******. I actually saw the security tapes and nearly killed the ******* that walked past the thief.

Moral of the story- it's in plain view, yes, but still be careful with your bike and take lots of precautions- act like it's still locked up in an unsecure area.
