After reading a very nice post by Digital Gee, I thought how great it would be for a group of S. Ca 50+ forum folks to get together. Has this ever been attempted or done?

Orange County, Ca.

A bunch of us (50 + and -'rs) got together before the Santa Fe Century a couple of years ago for dinner. The pictures are posted here somewhere. It was fun.

Don't know if it's been done, but count me in! (And thanks for the compliment, btw!)

I could just imagine the fun of all of those Diegos in one room.

Wow! Something just came to mind... In my junior high days, I took Spanish and each person had a Spanish name that was used in the class. It was generally the Spanish equivalent of the student's first name... Like Esteban for Steven, Roberto for Robert etc. There wasn't anything for Darwin, so I was Diego..

OK Let's do it!!!! I'm having surgery next week so will not be riding for a month. So, I drive the SAG wagon.

Let's set a tentative date and see how many folks we can round up.

How about July 29, 2006 somewhere in the middle of LA and San Diego
like San Clemente, Ca.

First of all no one in that photo looked 50!?!?!? Geez I feel really old!!!

I actually been involved in monthly rides with folks I met from another web site (teamestrogen.com). We have been startig our rides in Orange County (Tustin Ranch area) and have another one planned for the end of this month (which will probably start in Irvine). The folks have been coming from all over, mostly LA but one from Canyon Lakes and others from San Diego.

If any of you are looking for routes to do I have several I can send ya or you can come join us on July 30th. Warning, my group is very mixed - alot of "newbies" who are strong but not fast. I'm helping them train for the Cool Breeze Century.

If I don't have to work that day, I think I can make it, as well. Does anyone else want to carpool, bikepool, or trainpool to the event from north coastal San Diego County? (I live in Encinitas and work in the Carlsbad Airport Centre business park, immediately west of McClellan-Palomar Airport.)

The wifey and I are planning either a motorcycle trip or flying out to visit our son and his better-half in Camarillo. He has an extra bike and we are planning to ride from the gates of Pt. Magu to Redondo Beach (PCH) where the ladies will meet us at Naja's (Bier Joint on the International Boardwalk.) This is tentatively planned for sometime in August.

When plans solidify I'll post an update. Perhaps some 50 plusers might want to join in.

Hopefully my diet has progressed enough by then to allow me to cheat and enjoy an after-ride rewarding brew at Naja's. :o

Did this thought die out or are we really going to do a forum ride?

That date works for me--esp. if it's afternoon. I have a club ride Saturday morning. OTOH, if we're meeting AND riding, and if the speedies among you will wait for me, morning would be OK, too.

I'm in but know nothing about San Clemente. I assume we are going for some sort of ride and maybe lunch? I can google just about anyplace. Let me know the time and how far you want to ride. I amgetting faster but a nice slow ride wouldnt bother me a bit.

Chuck5.2...my email if you want to use that route to get this organized is yorbalisa@aol.com

July 29th!

I'm not riding due to surgery so I will drive the SAG Wagon if everyone wants to ride.

I really woud like to get together. I think it would be a real HOOT! (as I used to say in Texas).

Here is a link showing all Resteraunts in the area. Mexican is fine with me, actually I'm game for anything!!!!
Given the heat wave we are having the hotter the food for me the better. Eating Indian or Thai in SE Asia was always a sure bet to cooling off with some brewski's.

So, guys step up and help choose a place or I'll be left to make a decision. Then no complaints. (I'm not familiar with the resttraunts in that area.)

I may have to take a pass after all. My father (82) was hospitalized today with another in a series of heart problems, and I don't have much other information, but it's serious. My folks live in Florida, and I need to be able to travel suddenly. I'm also leaving tomorrow for a business trip of two days, so I won't be back here until Thursday, although I may have internet access on my trip. I will definately let you know one way or the other by Friday if I can make it.

If you need a suggestion, how about meeting at Christianitos in San Clemente? There's a Carl's Jr. right off the freeway. From there you can ride through the state park all the way to Las Pulgas (about 11 miles), then through Camp Pendelton to Oceanside (about 9 miles). Round trip to Oceanside is about 40 miles. It's hot, so I suggest riding early, say 7:00? This should be a no-drop ride, not a race!

Only downside - not possible for fthomas to drive "sag wagon" along this route, but it sounds like he does want to pick the place to eat!

Digital Gee:

So sorry to hear that! I'll put you all in my prayers!!!!

I used to live in Florida, living is used loosely as I found riding there to be a very high risk endeavor. None the less, have a safe business trip and keep us abreast of how your Dad is doing. It wasn't long ago that they celebrated their anniversary and you rode the distance.

Been there and done that with parents DG and know it can be taxing on the family.

Take care
Fred

Fred If folks are contemplating an early morning ride, that would leave the whole afternoon to kill. What would everyone think about:

1) 0700 to 1000: ride
2) 1030: brunch

or

1) 0800 to 1100: ride
2) 1130: lunch

Each individual could choose to participate in one or both activities.

If I bring either the red-and-white 1959 Capo road bike, or the red-white-and-blue Schwinn mountain bike, I'll be easy to spot. :)

My wife's 84-year-old father is in hospital, it's "cruch time" at work, and I stupidly reagitated my Achilles' tendinitis by running 1.7 miles last night in the shoes that may have caused the problem in the first place, or at least exacerbated it, so a postponement looks better all the time to me.

We had a very active thread over at the road cycling forum covering that ride. Sorry you missed out.
The ladies from Team Estrogen are putting together a ride for this Sunday, the 30th, and is open to BF members as well. There's an on going thread on this ride over at the road cycling forum...:)

OK, my father-in-law was released from the Veterans' Adminstration hospital last night and my own aches and pains are subsiding, so let's start thinking about another date for a get-together, such as an AM ride followed by brunch/lunch. How does Tullio Campagnolo's birthday (and mine; 26 Aug.) look?

Suggested route (comments invited):

San Diego based riders meet in north coast, such as Encinitas or Oceanside Transit Center, ride north to San Clemente (through Pendleton if permitted that particular day by that particular guard :(; otherwise on the I-5 shoulder) to meet the OC-based riders. Return south for brunch/lunch in O'side or Carslbad, after which OC riders head back north.

This makes a lot of sense. I was sort of dreading the drive in the wee hours of the morning up to San Clemente to meet up with the group, not being a morning person, as it were. :)
