Can I use my 1st generation C-record cranks with an 8-speed set-up? Do I need new chainrings?

Thanks,

Another question: Will the Chorus A/B derailleur work with 8-speed Ergo brifters?

Any modern crank and chainrings (that is anything made since 1960 or so) will work with 8-speed, and almost all will work with 9spd and 10spd too. The whole chainring compatibility thing is basically a non-existent issue. If you shift hard and fast and under load at you'll notice a minor improvement in front shifts with modern 9 and 10 speed rings, but for most of us who ride classic bikes and take a bit of care when shifting it makes no difference at all.

Any front derailleur will work, but I recall that only the later Chorus rear will index, not the first generation.

I concurr. I currently am using a Dura-Ace 7400 crankset with original chainrings ( believe it is 7 or 8 speed) with Dura-Ace 9 speed cassette and derailleurs. The shifting and crankset operation is fine. I also have a Campy 10 speed crankset on a 7 speed setup. It works fine.

Thanks to you both for the good news.
