Mountain Biking - Anyone ever ride in Fundy National Park?

I'm going camping at Fundy National Park this weekend. I went there to visit today, and it seemed like there were LOTS of beautiful Xc trails, and a tone of paved trails. The terrain is VERY mountainous, just wondering if anyone knew any good places to ride.

And, do any of you go fishing when you ride? I love to ride to places and set a line in the water. We went fishing in a few brooks today, and got a few little ones.

This fish is closely related to Lake trout, and can be crossed with Lake trout, and the offspring are called Splake.

This species mainly lives in brooks, streams, and rivers, although it can be found in some small lakes and lake superior.

Them's speckled trout. Otherwise known as brook trout in some places. Having grown up in the Miramichi region of NB I caught a lot of fish like that though notably bigger. Then later on in life I moved to the Bay of Fundy region of Nova Scotia and caught tons of those, though I think New Brunswick is better fishin. Your picture makes me homesick. There are rainbows here in Korea but they are elusive (at least for me) Also there are Mountain Trout and Manchurian trout which I have yet to find. I spent my childhood goin' fishin' with my rod and my bike. Good job.

Ahhhhhh, someone who ride to fish........you could be OK after all J. There are some really nice rivers and creeks we fly fish around here. Some times its a lot easier to get there on a bike.

You got yourself some juvenile brook trout.

Pretty much. The largest one is 9.5 inches, and second largest is 8. The other two are 6. The brook where we went was litered with them, they hide in the most unlikely of places! The brook was only about a rod's length wide, and usually very shallow. But they were everywhere, under downed logs, in ruts, anywhere's with cover. It's amazing how many we saw and missed in the water. Fundy is a great place to fish.

I recall there was some pretty harsh XC riding in Fundy... at least there was last time I was there, which was in the days of purple anodized everything.

No real narrow singletrack, but they had a lot of doubletracks and some closed gravel roads in REAL bad condition, which remains one of my favorite things. Back in the day I recall that we rode into Bennett Brook and came out through Marvin Lake, which as I recall involved traversing a ravine big enough to fairly be called a canyon. They might not let people do that any more, and I can see why if so.

My buddy lives at the bay of fundy. Other than that, nope never been there :)

I went fishing locally today. I went to some brooks and streams that are about a 5 minute drive from me. Got 3 more today

I went into Mapleton park for a while, missed quite a few in there. I needed my bike though, could have been better with it.

are those fish even legal to catch? dont they have to be a certain size or something? (Im a fishing noob though, I only fish ocasionally so dont yell at me :rolleyes: )

The minimum size is 4 inches for brook trout. All of the ones we keep are over 6 inches. The largest we caught this weekend was 9.5 inches. 2 weeks ago we got one that was 11 inches.

Brook trout don't get very big. Anything over 12 inches is considered large for brook trout. I can see why though, the brooks we fish in are only about 5-10 feet wide and usually less than 2 feet deep.

You might actually be able to get brook trout at your local grocery store (LGS). :rolleyes:

And you can actually go catch them yourself in Manitoba....you don't have to get someone from the east coast to send you some. :rolleyes:

Nope. But I intend to if ever I get back to that side of the planet. Given then current situation (ie. missiles and crazy dictators just a few miles to the North) that may be sooner than I think

Actually brook trout are native to Manitoba (mainly northern Manitoba) but have been stocked extensively in other locations. I used to work in Manitoba doing environmental impact assessments for most of the proposed Manitoba Hydro dams (among other projects)...so we did pretty extensive fisheries work throughout the province.

I can't wait to go biking at the Fundy this weekend!!! It's so amazing there! I'll try to get lots of pics for everyone to see, but I'm not sure how many my camera will hold.

I've ridden Fundy once, a few years ago. There are some sweet trails in there, should be a blast. I wasn't very familiar with the area when I went, some other riders were showing me the trails, so I can't help you find anything.

I saw LOTS of Mtbers there, and the odd roadie. Most of the bikes I saw were XC hardtails, mostly Kona's and Specialized. I saw some older looking ones too, might have been bontrager frames.

Have been to Fundy but without my bike, lots of good trails though. Should be able to find some brookies in the fresh water, maybe some stripers in the salt (not sure on regs. though). Good luck and have fun.

P.S. A couple of these brookies are 16-18 in. For reference the reel is a Penn 4500 on a 7 ft rod

The best scallops I ever had were at fundy National Park. Don't forget the salt water species.
