Introductions - Greetings from Rochester NY

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Though I'm not new to biking, I have been away from it for the past few years. I'm back now with a vengance and hope to continue year-round. I commute 10 miles round trip, and generally add on a few miles on the ride home. I'm married 31 years with three daughters, one of which shares my enjoyment with biking. Due partly to her encouragement and partly to my not wanting to wimp-out in the middle of a ride with her, I've logged 500 miles in the past nine weeks. I enjoy tinkering with the bikes almost as much as riding them and am fascinated with different or odd bikes. We own three tandems, three Alenax bikes, a Schwinn Town & Country, and assorted mountain, road and hybrid bikes. I can't wait to get my hands on a lwb recumbent. Enough rambling for now, thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself. Keep on peddaling.

Hi Lenny - I'm in Penfield but work in Henrietta right on Winton near the Canal. There are some new folks on this forum from Rochester so maybe we can do a ride sometime.

Welcome, hope you'll enjoy the forums! Hoping you'll show us the Alenax bikes at some point. I live within twenty miles of a great cycling museum

with an Alenax here in N.J., but I can never seem to find the time...
Haven't visited here in a bit - and of course the old password slipped my mind.
Anyways, good for you on commuting - I commute year round (cept on wind blown ice - that's a no no in my books) and totally enjoy it.
THis may be a little on the late side, but hey it's good info anyways ... I lead rides along the canal (I'm No 346 hehe) for the Rochester Bicycling Club. Great group of people - my ride leaves the Cole Tower restaurant area and ride up to Genesee Valley Park and back - total 14 mi. Nice ride, casual. And you don't have to a member to ride along.
Just wanted to let you know this - I'm not advertizing my club in any way, but as the Publicity Chair for them - it kind of comes natural because we have our booth and several area festivals/outdoor expositions and what I do is distribute information and talk to people about bicycling - getting back on the bike - helmets. I'm also leaning more towards bicycle advocacy - I want to see people out there on bicycles and applaud everyone for their commuting effort.
I commute to downtown every day and I'm seeing more and more people out there doing the same and that's great! Although with some we have to work on those "not blowing thru stoplights" and using proper signalling techniques ....
If you are interested in attending any ride (remember you do not have to be a member )- but just judge the ride you're looking into - we just went through and reclassifiedour rides so they are consistent - so when it says "extremely Hilly" - you know you're in for a good ride!!!

Hey there cranky,
I'm from Rochester too (but I left town after College in '81). Sounds like you've made connection with some good folks there. Sometimes I miss it, but there are lots of good rides here in South Central PA too. If you ever come down near Harrisburg, and want to go for a ride, give a holler.
Cheers,
Z

Ha! Funny that the first post I read is someone from Rochester. I lived there from 1986 until 1997; my first years of racing were in Rochester. A special place in my heart for the Genessee Valley Cycling Club (I was President in 1989). I still keep in touch with a few of the juniors I raced with from back in the late 80s...
