I'm at a crossroads in my life, and just endured a major loss that sort of broke my ties to the South.

I'm always dreaming of the Pacific Northwest and the big woods, I'm sort of a modern day, green romantic, Muiresque type. Time for a change. Life is short, I have nothing left to lose. I don't have anything to take with me besides my brain and a bike, and frankly speaking...I'm scared and thrilled of the idea at the same time.

Also considering: Seattle, Mtn. View, Colorado, Moab, Utah, New Mexico.

P.O. is at the top of the list. Well, after Whistler, BC.

I'll probably sell my car, house, and most of my furniture.

Well, maybe not the furniture. It took me ten years to collect those antiques. *sigh* Gotta let go, too many bad memories....

Actually, yes.

One motivating factor for leaving Atlanta; to escape the Disney version of itself that it has become in the last ten years.

Yeah, the south bay area is a zoo of it's own breed. If you want something bautiful, but rather odd at once, but in a good way....go check it out.

Oh, and if you ever go to the area around SJSU, ignore the gay male prostitutes...they are pretty much a protected species, and will leave you alone if you ignore them.

On the brightside, that areas has incredible mountains to go play in, as well as great roads to play on...and there is a BMX park, so whatever floats your boat, they have it.

Oh, and you get the yumminess of TK Noodle....they need to open one down here...NOW!

Portland is a wonderful place to ride a bicycle, that's for sure. Seattle's not bad either, especially compared to Atlanta. It tends to be sunnier for a little longer here than in Seattle. I prefer the community feel of Portland to Seattle, but that's just me. Seattle is a bigger city, so you tend to have more going on.

I moved here from metro Detroit 10 years ago. My brother followed me out 5 years later. We can't imagine living anywhere else.

DENVER DENVER DENVER !!!

(or at least Colorado, for Pete's Sake)

a) more days of sunshine than Hawaii
b) mountains. Yes, REAL mountains
c) fiddy six is moving here to go to school (well, I dunno if that's a good reason ;) )
d) Colorado just passed a no-smoking-in-bars law. YIPPEE!!
e) cost of living is pretty decent; I bought a house 5 miles from downtown for under 200k. Can you do that in Portland?
and 5) it's Fricken COLORADO, man. There's a reason why people from the PNW move here.

Okay, that was the good ol' days. Wouldn't live anywhere else myself.

"Keep Portland Weird" better expresses the current sentiment and it's one that I endorse. Dine at real restaurants--elegant and expensive or funky and cheap or even a dump--but avoid the franchises (Burgerville is an exception). Go to real movie theatres instead of the factory cinemas that spring up all over. Take up a craft. Have at least a few things you picked up recycled. Drink local brews. Meet me at the Virginia Cafe on Tuesdays.

If you're brave enough, talk to the street people. I usually do. The voice inside my head tells me what to say.

I feel the town has diminished slightly ever since the minister of The Church of Elvis lost her lease.

I say Seattle. Why?

Sorry, I just can't help whipping this one out. :)

The bluest skies you've ever seen in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green in Seattle
Like a beautiful child growing up free and wild
Full of hopes and full of fears
Full of laughter full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years in Seattle
In Seattle
When it's time to leave your home and your loved ones
It's the hardest thing a boy can ever do
And you pray that you will find
Someone warm and sweet and kind
But you're not sure what's waiting there for you
The bluest skies you've ever seen in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green in Seattle
Like a beautiful child growing up free and wild
Full of hopes and full of fears
Full of laughter full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years in Seattle
In Seattle
When you find your own true love
You will know it
By her smile, by the look in her eye
Scent of pine trees in the air
Never knew a day so fair
It makes you feel so good
That you could cry
The bluest skies you've ever seen in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green in Seattle
Like a beautiful child growing up free and wild
Full of hopes and full of fears
Full of laughter full of tears

Why not all of the above? Become a nomad for a while. Get rid of everything you own except for what will fit in/on your car. Move someplace and stay there for a couple months to a year. Then leave. Rinse and repeat until you find whatever it is you're looking for.

I think that's what I'd be doing if I didn't have certain obligations to attend to.

Well, for starters I'll probavly get rid of the Audi. It's too damn expensive to drive it across the US, and keep it maintained. I have the title in hand, so I'll probably sell it cheap and ride the train across the country with my bike, guitar, and a couple of good books. I hope to write a couple of good ones in the process...

Colorado sounds good, but I just remembered how quiet it was the last time I was there. Not "wierd" enough for me. A bit too conservative. And I'm done with skiing. Much rather go ocean kayaking. Love that. So...I need the coastline to be within striking distance.

As for expensive housing, I'll either rent out my current digs, or try to sell. I heard a speaker this morning say that not being able to sell her house was an excuse for her not to move to California and live out her dreams; she rented it out and moved anyway. Wound up making more money than she thought and bought a new house. It's possible. A longshot, but possible.

Seattle is cool, but I know it has a shorter riding season, and Mnt. Rainer is actually kinda far for a quick mountain ride.

California is out. Too many people, too expensive...would have to keep my car, too. (too spread out).

Hmmmm.....everything's getting clearer.:)

Dude, New Hope, PA is just the ticket. Nice sleepy little 'bohemian' village during the week. The floodgates of strange open up on the weekends. It's right on the Delaware River so you could Kayak you heart out, and the Atlantic Ocean is only an hour or so away. Plus, you wouldn't have to cross the country.

"Keep Portland Weird"
This slogan was stolen from Austin, Texas.

All your other reasons are still good ones, though. ;)

Bikey reasons to move to Portland:

The Sprockettes
ZooBomb
Pedalpalooza
Multnomah County Bike Fair
Chunkatulon
Shift

If you're from the south, you will appreciate the much diminished annoying bug population in Portland, as well.

Moab has been overrun with tourists and urban refugees, it's just not the same as it was 30 years ago.

New Mexico is nice, but you should pick your location carefully. Albuquerque is not that nice of a city, Santa Fe and Taos are pretentious and expensive, there are racial tensions even in the hinterlands, and they've got water problems everywhere. My favorite spots in New Mexico are mostly in the SW corner of the state, in and around Silver City.

Mountain View, Colorado I don't know about.

Yup. good times there.

If fact, I've lived/vacationed all over the East Coast. From Canada to Niagra to Rochester to Buffallo to Manhattan to Brooklyn, from PA to VA to DC and Myrtle Beach. Kentucky and Mississipi, to Tennessee and the Okefanokee. From Alabama to GA, all the way back to Florida (where I was born).

Time for a change.

Interesting thing about Portland is that, and if you work for an employer doing outdoor work, you'll probably be sent home because it's too hot to work if it ever reaches 90 degrees.

FYI -- Flying into Portland and then biking to Astoria and continuing south along the Oregon coastline is the best touring in my view :)

Anyone remember the show?

"So look out everyone Here Come the Brides.

I remember the music to the refrain but not the verses. Seattle had a shortage of marriageable women and New Bedford had a surplus, if I recall the premise of the show. Somehow things worked out such that Seattle got a "shipment" of women from New England. Imagine the good scenes and lines the writers had to cut in those days of strict censorship. It woulda been fun to watch them.

edit:
They couldn't have got away with putting the racier lines into Latin, the way you do with your avatar. :-)
