Mountain Biking - Don't laugh - mountain bike trails in Maryland/DC or surrounding area?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a mountain bike that I got as a gift for graduating high school. I chose a mountain bike because I wanted to be able to ride on the dirt roads in Georgia. Now I live in Maryland, where there are no dirt roads. For a while I was thinking of getting a road bike, because it would be more appropriate around here. Well, I don't really want to buy a new road bike and I am quite attached to my mountain bike. I like not having to change my tire every time I hit a pothole. Can anyone here on this forum tell me where I could get the most out of my mountain bike in the DC area? I live in Millersville, Maryland and I mostly ride on the B & A trail - it that helps anyone place me.

goto potapsco bro, you'll love it. its only about 20minutes from you, a bunch of us ride every sunday. most of the guys from the shop (race pace in columbia), they all have sunday off and there are some nice downhills right off route 1 near Elkridge.
You can pick up a huge map from there, potapsco has over 170miles of trails its HUGE.
my favorite is Mckeldin area of the park. its exit 83 Marriotsville Rd off I-70. 5mi on marriotsville rd and its on your right. its $2 to get in before 5pm and the trails are sick. they have the 'family oriented' trails, to the 'this was a big mistake' trails. g'luck, shoot me a pm if you wanna meet up at the shop on sunday with us. peace.

Also look at Gambrill SP, and I believe there's another park whose name I can't remember right now that isn't too far from Gambrill. Here's another link: http://www.trails.com/toptrails.asp?area=10094
Schaeffer is good for XC riding. I haven't been to Black Hill, which opened fairly recently (around the time I moved away from the area). If you venture down to VA, there are a couple of options I can think of offhand. Difficult Run goes from Great Falls to Reston, and though it can be pretty wet at times, is a nice ride- you can make it a couple of hours long pretty easily. Wakefield/Accotink is in Springfield VA off of Braddock Rd. They have a lot of races during the year, including a month-long Wed. evening race series that is a lot of fun. You can also ride out there for a couple of hours without running out of trail.

schaffer farms, loch raven etc.
Call citybikes in chevy chase (the AM store is more urban, though Euan will know).
