Classic & Vintage - Chicago vintage bikes . . .

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello fellow bike people,
I want to buy a 1970's-1980's Schwinn or Peugeot to restore and make into a singlespeed/fixed gear bike . . . where is a good place in Chicago to find old vintage bikes?
I found out about a place called the "Working Bikes Cooperative" where they have a huge warehouse down on Western . . . have any of you had any experience getting a bike from there?
Any ideas on finding an old schwinn or peugeot would be helpful. Thanks!

I am in suburban chicago.Craigslist is a good place to look for bikes but the good stuff sells real fast.I sell about 100 bikes every summer on craigslist ,mostly transportation bikes, but i have also sold lots of good bikes and frames for single speed conversions. What size frame do you want?I may have something.

I'm 5'10 . . . so probably a 52 at the smallest to a 55 at the largest . . . I can always change the stem to make it fit . . . I'm not so concerned about make . . . I just want a 70/80'ish steel lugged frame without alot of rust. If you've got something or get something in the near future let me know.

Why dont you contact mr payphone from the rat patrol on these boards? You could find him in the alt bicycle section. I'm sure he'd sell you what you're looking for cheap.

Working Bikes is where you want to go. Their shop is at Western and Grenshaw (one block nort of Roosevelt). They often have a large selection of old Schwinns. You have to go early this time of year though because the store gets cleaned out quickly. On Saturdays they let people search the warehouse too but most of the bikes there mostly aren't in rideable condition.
