I have been riding and running a lot, mostly trying to get in good enough shape to tour, but lately, I have been thinking about racing. I heard there is a clydesdale class there.

What is the weight cutoff for the clydesdale races?

I am 175 right now, and I can bulk up really easily (mesomorphic body type) If the cutof is like 190, I wouldn't have too much trouble getting there, and it might help my cycling to have a bit more muscle.

However, if the cutoff is like 210 or 220, I wouldn't want to move up, because that would hurt my running too much. (knee injuries, etc.) So what's the deal?

The alternative is that I could lose weight and go for cat 5 racing, where I think I might be competitive with some training.

Also, what is the deal with crits? Are they also arranged by the same categories? what is a crit?

I don't know anything about the touring you mentioned, but I can offer some info. on racing.

Criteriums (crits.) are arranged the same way as any road race or time trial would be. The categories range from 1-5 (men). All a criterium is is a type of mass-start race that is usually run on a closed course, is relatively flat, has multiple laps (1 lap is about a mile or less), and usually includes some turns.

Cat. 5 races would be a good place to start to get in some shape. Good-luck!

I may be wrong but I have never heard of clydsdale class for road racing, only mtb racing. Start in cat 5 win then move up.
