General Cycling Discussion - National Bike Registry anybody do this?

I bought a Kryptonite Lock and it had a National Bike Registry card that says for $10 they will enter my bike in a database that will help my bike be returned to me if stolen. Any one have this work for them?

Not yet. When I proposed sort of a free registry here on BF two moderators said NO and referred me to that bicycle registry. If Koffee and Maelstrom had heard anything bad about them I doubt they would have referred me.

My bike is registered. Giant offered me a free 6 months with NBR when I registered my bike with them, but I subsequently purchased 10 years for 10 bucks directly from NBR.

Great idea. We can't even get the kids at the university here to use our registration/bike-lock program.

We give 'em a high-end Kryptonite lock and register the bike for 20.00, AND refund the 20 bucks when they leave. What a deal!

Yep...most of the PD's in my area check the database on any stolen or abandoned bikes that they come across. It has resulted in quite a few folks that I know of getting their bikes back.

This is nice to read. I had not noticed the sticker under the BB of my Giant until a few months ago (I bought it new about 3 years ago) and wondered... I don't think my LBS offered me the 6 months, but it did get me to thinking about registering my bike.

$10 for 10 years sounds like it is well worth the peace of mind. I know it guarantees nothing, but any chance to get something stolen back is worth exploring.

Who operates the registry and what do they do with the data collected? Who has access to it?

In MN they have a registration scheme where you get a serial numbered sticker for the bike and are issued a faux vehicle title. It's part of the same database law enforcement uses for motor vehicles.

That explains it... I just realized (3+ years later) that I didn't get a manual. :D

At any rate, I already have a number, so at least I don't have to wait for the sticker for that bike. Now to figure out if I care enough about 3 bikes or more to go for the family rate for the discount... I think I will...

Last week, I registered my new Raleigh on their web site. I was given the opportunity to register my bike with the NBR for a free 6 month membership.

Registering your bike will also probably take some $$ off that bicycle theft rider on your renter's insurance. :)

I registered my last bike with the National Bike Registry eleven years ago...I don't think they even had a web presence back then! I didn't realize they were still in existence, but I suppose it couldn't hurt to register my new bike. Thanks for reminding me.
